1: Structure
Shape Challenge #1: Draw an animal of your choice, but simplify its body to basic shapes and forms as in the examples below (use a reference image of an animal online or draw one of your pets). Do at least two drawings (it can be the same animal in different poses or two different animals).
2: Logo
Shape Challenge #2: Watch the videos and design a logo with a vector program like Adobe Illustrator. You can also use a free online vector graphic editing program like Vectr. You may use any fonts that can be downloaded here for any additional text around your logo, but for the shapes of the logo itself (even if it is made up of letters or numbers) you need to create it yourself. The shapes are the most important thing here (positive and negative space). Color can make it compelling, but we won't work on color choices until the color challenges.
3: Paper Polyhedra
Shape Challenge #3: Create at least four paper models by printing out some templates of your choosing (you can find some from one of these two sites, or I highly recommend you make your own Kaleidocycle by visiting one of these two sites!) Be sure to "scale to fit" your paper to make it as big as possible, and only print the pages you want to make models out of. If you didn't print them on thick paper, try gluing or tracing them on thin cardboard or thick paper, folding and glueing where needed. Remember, craftsmanship is important for this assignment. Again, you can add color but you will not be graded on color. Just make sure your still life doesn't look carelessly thought out or constructed.
1. Arrange your 3D forms into a pleasing arrangement.
2. Photograph your models as a still life using a spotlight (flashlight in a dark room) to create dramatic shadows and highlights.
3. Create a black and white pencil drawing of your solids from your photograph, taking care to reproduce the dramatic values the best you can. Think of how you can use contour lines and expressive lines (especially hatching) to create the illusion of value change, which helps describe the volume of your forms.
4. When you finish, take another photograph, this time of your drawing!
5. Upload two JPG images to the discussion board section called "Paper Polyhedra". The first one will be your original still life photo and the second will be the photo you take of your drawing.
