COLOMBIA ASKS US TO PAUSE TARIFFS IN DEADLY QUAKE'S AFTERMATH

BOGOTÁ – Newly elected Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump for a temporary suspension of tariffs on Colombian goods, as the country struggles with the aftermath of a devastating earthquake, as reported by ThePrint.

Earthquake Devastation and Economic Burden

·         The Disaster: A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, heavily impacting cities like Cali and Pereira. The disaster has left nearly 300 people dead, destroyed thousands of homes, and triggered massive structural and infrastructural damage.

·         The Tariff Pressure: U.S. tariffs on Colombian products increased from 10% to 12.5% in late July under Section 301 provisions (with key exceptions like coffee and oil). De la Espriella noted that pausing these duties would offer vital breathing room for local business owners and exporters grappling with the disaster's financial fallout.
