July 3, 2026

On July 3, 2026, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) issued its first official response regarding the ongoing investigation into the embezzlement of donations at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya.

KEY POINTS FROM THE RSS STATEMENT

·         Deep Concern: RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale described the incident as "deeply painful" and "unfortunate," noting that the temple represents the faith and sacrifices of generations of devotees.

·         Call for Strict Action: The RSS has demanded stringent punishment for those found guilty of misappropriating temple funds. It fully supports the ongoing probe by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) established by the Uttar Pradesh government.

·         Emphasis on Transparency: The organization has urged the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust to address shortcomings in its administrative and operational systems. Hosabale emphasized the need for transparent financial management to restore public trust.

·         Appeal for Restraint: The RSS appealed to the Hindu community to exercise patience while the investigation proceeds, while simultaneously cautioning against "conspiracies" by forces allegedly seeking to use the incident to malign Hinduism and the Hindu community.

STATUS OF THE INVESTIGATION

·         Arrests: Authorities have arrested eight individuals, including personnel previously involved in the counting of donations. Footage recovered by investigators allegedly shows some of these individuals hiding cash bundles during the counting process.

·         Recoveries: Police have recovered nearly ₹80 lakh in cash linked to the embezzlement.

·         Trust Leadership: Amid the controversy, Trust General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra have resigned from their posts. The Trust is expected to address these resignations and discuss future management reforms during a meeting scheduled for July 6, 2026.
