MICROSOFT ENGINEER'S FINAL EMAIL CAUSES STIR

On June 26, 2026, an employee at a Microsoft data center in Italy—identified only as "Nour," a Critical Environment Technician—sent an email to thousands of colleagues across Europe announcing his resignation. The email has since gained widespread attention for its sharp critique of the company's involvement in the conflict in Gaza.

KEY ALLEGATIONS IN THE RESIGNATION EMAIL

·         Accusations of Complicity: Nour claimed that for the "past 994 days," Microsoft has powered "the genocide of our people in Palestine." He alleged that the company’s European data centers are being used to support surveillance programs and the development of experimental digital weaponry.

·         Critique of AI Programs: He further alleged that Microsoft's technology powers AI-targeting programs used by the Israeli military, claiming these tools "invent arbitrary justifications" to target non-combatants.

·         "Mass Surveillance": He reframed Microsoft's infrastructure as "mass surveillance centers," urging his colleagues to "join the Worker Intifada" and refuse to contribute their labor to the company’s current projects.

MICROSOFT’S POSITION AND CORPORATE CONTEXT

Microsoft has consistently addressed these allegations with a more cautious stance, noting that internal and external reviews have found no evidence that its Azure platform was used to harm civilians.

·         Review and Policy Enforcement: Following reports of data being used by the Israeli defense ministry, Microsoft president Brad Smith stated in September 2025 that the company had "ceased and disabled" a set of services to the unit in question. Microsoft maintains that it does not provide technology to facilitate the mass surveillance of civilians.

·         Conflict Over Data Relocation: Nour alleged that Microsoft colluded with the Israeli military to move intercepted data from the Netherlands to Israel to conceal evidence. While reporting has confirmed that data was indeed moved out of the Netherlands following media exposure, Microsoft characterized this as an enforcement of its own Terms of Service rather than a cover-up.

·         Internal Pressure: This resignation follows a broader campaign by a group of employees known as No Azure for Apartheid (NOAA). This group has staged protests and mass email campaigns, which they credit with pressuring Microsoft to end certain contracts and initiate internal investigations, including the removal of its Israel general manager earlier in May 2026.

Nour concluded his email by encouraging his peers to sign the NOAA petition and take a stand against the company's labor practices. Microsoft has not provided a specific comment on Nour’s individual resignation email beyond its standing commitment to ethical AI and human rights principles.
