On our journey to sustainable lifestyle, we have to take into consideration all our everyday habits question them and adjust them when necessary. Among these habits is the excessive meat consumption. Today almost 15% of greenhouse emissions come only from meat ,dairy and eggs production. It is estimated that removing meat from our diet only once per week would reduce the emissions by 1,0-1,3 gigatones which equals to taking 273 million cars out of the roads. How is this possible one would wonder, we have the answers for you.
The main livestock emissions are carbon dioxide causing deforestation and nitrous oxide.Methane emissions which are produced during ruminant animals digestion are responsible for ⅓ of agriculture emissions overall can’t e left out either. More than 33% of global arable land is used for animal feed production and what’s worse this number isn’t stale. While the world population increases and developing countries switch from plant based diets to meat centered diets, there is an accelerating pressure to clear forests in order to satisfy the meat demands. In this way livestock and feed lands which require extra resources, replace forests at an ever growing loss of rainforests like amazon which are our main weapon to reduce carbon dioxide. At the same time a great amount of available fresh water globally, 70% of it goes to agriculture ,where its biggest part is consumed dy livestock and croplands.
All in all cutting out meat once a week isn’t hard at all. It’s more a call for adventure to explore other options and slowly introduce yourselves to sustainable cooking.
