Preparing materials for lessons is usually a very laborious task. In the case of reading comprehension, we have to look for a text that is engaging, relevant to the topic we are dealing with and adapted to the level of the learners. After looking for a text that meets all the requisites, we finally found "the chosen one." Great!
However, we have forgotten another essential factor: Copyright. Unless we fulfil the requirements and guidelines of the Copyright law and the indications provided by the author, we must not use the text.
I've been in this situation frequently. And it is frustrating. For that reason, I decided to use materials under a Creative Commons license. I made a conscious search on the Internet, and I could find some news websites and blogs which offer their content under one of the different CC licences. Some of them allow editing or remixing their content. This is very important, as it allows us to shorten the texts or edit them to change some difficult vocabulary or structures.
Nevertheless, remember that it is still important to give the appropriate attribution to the authors and sources. Furthermore, remember that the final work must comply with the rules of each license.
