The San Francisco Giants have announced they acquired OF Lamonte Wade Jr. from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for RHP Shaun Anderson.
Wade, 27, looks to be a versatile depth piece for the Giants. He is capable of playing all three outfield positions as well as first base. Wade is the type of hitter Farhan Zaidi targets often. He walks a lot, doesn’t strike out much, and has some untapped power. The left handed hitter has a career slash line of .211/.336/.347 with a wRC+ of 90. He also has an impressive 13.3 career BB%.
This moves makes a lot of sense of the Giants. Throughout the offseason, the Giants have signed RHPs such as Matt Wisler and John Brebbia. They have signed a number of RHPs to minor league contracts such as Dominic Leone, Zack Littell, James Sherfy, and Silvino Bracho. They even took a RHP, Dedniel Nunez, in the rule 5 draft. Because of this, it left them with an abundance of RHPs fighting to make the roster. This made RHP Shaun Anderson expendable. Despite his 3.52 ERA in 2020. Anderson had a FIP of 5.73 and a -0.2 WAR. He didn't stand a great chance at making the big league bullpen. Farhan Zaidi expressed his desire of adding another versatile, LHH outfielder. Wade can fill this role perfectly. I expect Wade to compete with outfielders Darin Ruf, Steven Duggar, and Jaylin Davis for the teams fifth outfield spot on the big league roster. Wade is under team control until 2026 should the Giants decide to keep him that long.
