“Soren we need you to go write an article now,'' my boss yelled as I walked into the Denver Jewish Day School hallway with my computer and the eager sense to find a mystery to please my boss and give him the mystery article he and The Paw needed.
As soon as I stepped out into the hall I saw Eden Bichachi and Penina Pinkhas, two DJDS sophomores sprawled out on the floor. ‘This couldn't be too comfortable’ I thought to myself and boom, it hit me Denver Jewish Day School’s next big mystery.
Why do students always seem to be so sleepy and why do they lie down wherever and whenever? When and where are the best places to rest, nap, and chill throughout the day?
As my investigation took place, Eden and Penina went around the school rating what couches, chairs, and even floors were the most comfortable. After our thorough investigation, we came to the conclusion that the upstairs hallway, with the window overlooking the baseball field, was the overall best place to rest in the entire school. [See rankings below]
Eden and Penina didn't just rate it the best due to its comfortability, cushion, or even size. They rated it the best because of the “10 out of 10 environment.''
They both said that they liked the environment the best because it's a prime location to watch and socialize due to its proximity to the bathrooms. One of my questions was answered but I was still hungry for more answers. Why are Denver Jewish day school students so sleepy?
I interviewed many DJDS students to uncover the mystery we are all trying to answer.
“I feel sleepy at school because I need more sleep,” said Tamar Goldberg Butler, a DJDS 8th grader. She elaborated on this by talking about all her after-school activities almost every day of the week. This tends to lead to less homework time which leads to less sleep and equals to more stress.
According to Healthline.org, 73 percent of high school students regularly do not get enough sleep. It is suggested that teens get between eight to 10 hours of sleep every night. However, according to Better Health, most teens only get around 6.5-7.5 hours of sleep per night.
The majority of DJDS students cited the lack of ample time to complete homework as the primary reason for lack of sleep.
“I have a lot of homework I have to, and all of the other things I have to do outside of school,” said Ian Boyd, a DJDS Freshman, “I also think I procrastinate a lot.”
While stress and anxiety seem to be an underlying factor as to why many students are so tired worldwide, it doesn’t seem to be a big cause at DJDS.
“It’s a pretty chill environment here [at DJDS],” said Adam Abassi, a DJDS 8th grader.
