As Dr. Jeremy Golubcow-Teglasi steps into his new role as DJDS principal, Wednesday's schedule turns into a focus on clubs.
Wednesday classes are packed with a variety of extracurriculars. According to Dr. G.T.’s mission, these are meant to allow us to explore areas that lack exposure during normal school hours. These new options range from being able to take new languages to going on field trips, and even to coffee tastings.
With new options for Jewish classes, Do the students feel the same? We have interviewed a few with their opinions on the new Wednesday classes as this is a huge change from last year not just for the students but also for the teachers too.
Max Raphley [7th grade] said “that his clubs were fun but were mostly useless and he didn't think he would be getting lots out of these clubs.” Solly Bielsky on the other hand [10th grade] and Zarah Nakash [ 6th grade] said that they were excited to expand their education and are happy that they were allowed to have this big opportunity to pick new classes, which are different from normal boring regular schedule classes. I believe that most students are excited about these new options but aren't quite sure what they will be getting out of it.
Naomi Kimel [9th grade] said "I am excited for the Shop class because I get to learn more about building things and I enjoy building things with my grandpa.” Ryan Sharp [6th] said, “My favorite class is chess because I get to learn new strategies.”
These schedules provided lots more opportunities to be able to accomplish new things in class rather than outside of school Lavi Trujillo [12th] says "The schedule has given me more time for my passion", as he has worked as a veterinarian assistant for the last year. It has also allowed him to take French; he has wanted to take French since 7th grade and now he can with the new schedule.
When we look at public schools we see how many extracurriculars are being offered in all the different languages as well. We can't even compete. But with these new clubs, we can make an effort to start. The good thing about being in a small school is that almost everyone is getting the classes they want and if they are not happy in a class they can easily switch out of the classes to one they enjoy more. In all everyone is excited about these new clubs and they have a lot of students excited for the school year.
