Sacred Heart - Alexandra Pde end, 433 Brunswick St, Fitzroy VIC 3065
Think hipster but not too hipster. Good music, a musky smell in the air and an oldie at the register. A few young ones but a plentiful supply of pensioners with fantastic salt and pepper hair. Sacred heart is a treasure chest filled with Levi’s jeans and perfectly aged converse, simply awaiting to be discovered. Items don’t hang around for too long, but a steady rotation ensures good quality. There will always be a few teenage dirtbags but never enough to drain this Sacred Heart of all its gold. Millennials may be up the road drinking oat milk lattes (only Oatley of course) but this op shop remains untainted – it has plenty of the nitty and gritty.
Salvos - 300 Station St, Fairfield VIC 3078
Every Salvos always seem to be a success, but this one is a hidden gem. If you like order and organization this op shop is the one for you. Clothing is not only grouped by garment but also by size and colour. This is a relaxing and unproblematic way to op shop - great for beginners. Clothing is the main commodity here, with a scattering of shoes and handbags. You are bound to score a corduroy or linen item at the Station street Salvos. The only drawback from this op shop is its location, but if you don’t live in the Fairfield area hop on the bus (the 567).
Savers - 330 Sydney Rd, Brunswick VIC 3056
A classic and well known one stop shop. Despite its infamous scratching metal hangers, the faulty trolleys, strong stenches, and long lines – you can be guaranteed to fine at least one tactile soulmate within the hordes of clothing. Sundays do 20% off for students, although beware the selection by then has been scoured over and picked at by hipsters throughout the week. Everyone has a preferred section to start in, what will it be: skirts, dresses, activewear? This is another great option for beginners, it’s well organized and open seven days a week. The sheer scale of the place can get a little overwhelming so bring a pal to rest against if you’re new to the experience. Take note: Savers is technically not an op shop, but still worth a visit.
St Andrews - 85 Gillies St, Fairfield VIC 3078
If you’re looking for old sewing patterns and magazines perfect for collage this one is for you. You’re bound to find a bargain here; low prices and great finds are the result of limited passing foot traffic. This op shop is located in the car park next to the St Andrews church. It is very old-school and quaint, with volunteers from the church and clothing racks wheeled out the front each morning. St Andrews op shop is perfect for a relaxed browse: the friendly volunteers and the small shop makes for a perfect combo. They are only open 10am till 3pm, Tuesday to Friday so best fit for a visit on school holidays.
MS community shop - 88C Station St, Fairfield VIC 3078
This op shop has it all; from clothing to books to interesting knick knacks - you’re bound to find something to tickle your fancy. They have a great selection of books and the display case is packed with intriguing jewelry. A walk by the display window is sufficient if you’re in a rush, as they often have discounted items lined up out the front. Like all of the favourites, this oppy can be a bit hit and miss, but it’s on station street so you can always head over to the St Andrews op shop if you leave this one empty handed.
