Most of us can attest to a spike in productivity at the start of lockdown. We figured that with all the free time that was now available and without the entertainment of friends, lockdown would be the perfect time to knit that blanket, read that book or follow in that internet guy’s footsteps and ‘make millions’ using his ‘simple trick’.
My friends and I chose to - instead of joining a pyramid scheme - make some clothes. And look, I’ve got to say, sewing is not for the faint hearted; deciphering pattern instructions, unpicking threads and ending up with a wildly imperfect item of clothing was almost the death of me. But (and this is a big but) there’s something so satisfying about understanding the intricacies of how your clothes are made and producing something for no cost (even if it isn’t very good) out of fabric that probably would have spent its life collecting dust if not for you.
So, get out that old sewing machine that’s undoubtedly sitting in your study, attic or spare bedroom, search for a free pattern online and get sewing. To start off it might be easier to alter clothing you already own or make something easy like a small bag or pencil case. The final results will be satisfying no matter what - as you can see from these pictures of us gallivanting around Northcote, making clothing can be fun. Hopefully it can serve as some inspiration; if we can do it so can you!
