The recent death of George Floyd and the ensuing Black Lives Matter protests in America sparked long overdue anger and conversation about police brutality. They also forced Australia to confront its own prevalent and all-pervasive systemic racism that has led to statistics such as those found by the Australian Government, which show Indigenous Australians make up just 2% of total population, but 27% of prison population. This means that they are 15 times more likely to become incarcerated. Why is this?
The answer lies in a national culture of suppressed violent history, institutional racism and unacknowledged generational trauma. The resources collected on this page are intended to provide a launching pad for learning about Australia’s racist history and continual shunning and silencing of the first culture on the land, as well as statistics and stories that deconstruct the general racial inequality within our country.
Often Australia’s brutal history is forgotten/ignored by those in power; only a fortnight ago our Prime Minister Scott Morrison declared that ‘there was no slavery’ in Australian history and never had been, despite the succinct documentation of Australia’s own history of ‘blackbirding’ - from 1836 some 62,000 Pasifika people were tricked or forced into coming to work for minimal pay in slave-like conditions on the Queensland sugar plantations.
Some of these resources will provide links to further research and tools for activism, but if you would like to access more information, feel free to contact the NHS Spiel for assistance at newspapernhs@gmail.com.
