Behind the Scenes

Who is Thelma's VA Services?

If you’re wondering who Thelma’s VA Services is, let me tell you. I am Thelma Rossouw and I live in Cape Town, South Africa. I was born and have lived here my whole life. I am a down to earth girl that loves both her animals and family members.

I have two pugs, Vrommel and Vice. Vrommel I bought from a breeder when he was a puppy but after being enlightened to the fact that there are too many unwanted animals in shelters that are being “put to sleep”, I no longer support breeding because of factors such as this, caused by irresponsible breeding, etc.

Vrommel is currently eight years old and a very demanding little boy. Vice was adopted from Pug Rescue South Africa on 11 May 2017. He is such a little angel who loves being photographed and giving kisses. I am also a cat mama, all of which are rescues except for the youngest one that was adopted from The Kitten Cottage in 2018.

In terms of motor vehicles and the class, I would have to say that my favourite brand is definitely Volkswagen. I have been driving cars from this brand since I was approximately 23 years old. When I was younger, I wanted the best and latest models, going through Volkswagens faster than the weather changed. Being older and wiser now, material things no longer matter as much. As such, I have been driving my current car since April 2015.

My family means the world to me. My father passed away on 9 July 2017, which was the worst day of my life. My mom and I live with each other and every two months or so, my eldest niece stays with us. She travels between us and her parents’ home. I have an older married brother. He has three children, Madelein (23), Iain (21) and Elize (18). They are my pride and joy, whom I love like they are my own children, even though I only have four legged children.

I like to read in my spare time, that is, if I get the time. I also like to play games, whether it is on Facebook, or my favourite game, The Sims 4. I really enjoy spending time with my four-legged children. Vrommel and Vice love to go for walks every day, on the condition that it isn’t raining. Sometimes Vrommel wants to be carried whilst Vice just enjoys his stroll.

Before these two, I had two other dogs. My Doberman Pincher was named Snoepie. My uncle gave him to me when I was ten years old. He was extremely intelligent and knew exactly what Christmas present was his in front of the tree, and naturally would only try to open his present by himself. He died of a heart attack at sixteen years of age. My other dog, Snuffel, I adopted from the, previously named, Grassy Park SPCA. She was a cross breed, but no one could ever tell me what breeds she was a mixture of. She was a real lady, even if she would attempt to bite strangers. She died at the age of thirteen, when I had to make the very difficult decision to put her to sleep because all her organs were giving in. She passed away on 10 January 2011, and in August 2011, I bought Vrommel.

I grew up in a happy home. My parents were married 54 years and 8 months when my father passed away. After leaving school, I started my career in the old Posts and Telecommunications sector as a data entry capturer. After ten years, I changed career path and started at Telkom SA Ltd, Centre for Learning, where I was an administrative officer, and then later moved onto a personnel officer in Human Resources. After that, I moved over to curriculum design and training in 1999, where I became a Learning and Development Specialist.

During my career as a Learning and Development specialist, I attended the University of Cape Town and obtained a Diploma in Education. After 29 years and 4 months, I decided to leave the company and pursue a career as a Freelancer. During my freelancing career, I upskilled myself and obtained a Diploma in Copywriting, a Certificate in Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certficiate.

I freelanced until September 2018, until I opened my own Virtual Assistant business in October 2018, and that, is how Thelma’s VA Services was born.
