October Edition 2017
Some of Ireland's most talented creative artists live among us. John Shortt is one of these and is our resident professional photographer.
Having built a business around his passion and with studios here in Navan and in Dublin his photography skills are in demand.
Upon meeting John you immediately see why he's a popular family photographer. He is a people person who quickly and effortlessly puts you at ease. His natural relaxed charm together with a skill with a camera has enabled him to build up a client base, a strong portfolio, impressive awards, nominations, and column space in several articles and bloggs.
His business is flourishing and his website illustrates many of the moments he’s captured ranging from celebration events, studio shoots through to still life.
Take a look through the portfolio on display in John’s website and you’ll see smiling, happy and relaxed clients. There’s a technical skill involved in producing these shots but it’s the experience he has in being in the right place, at the right moment with the subjects in the right mood and frame of mind……….. that ‘one off’ magical moment captured.
With high quality digital cameras on smartphones many of us are taking better photos more often. However not many of us like to see ourselves in photo’s probably because we’re not relaxed, we lack confidence and we feel under pressure to look like magazine models. It's as if we actually expect to look terrible in the picture.
A professional like John has the experience and eye for capturing your ‘best side’ at just the right moment.
One of the first engagements couples make after setting a wedding date and location is the services of a professional photographer and John Shortt Photography comes highly recommended.
Having seen so many celebration events John is a great source of tips and advice for yours.
If you're looking to get some party pictures and add a little excitement then these are extremely popular at all kinds of events. John can provide these to capture your guests 'at play' and they are able to pose late into the evening and you get to capture the moments.
Not many photographers have access to a studio venue and John has 2 which can be arranged for different occasions.
The studio allows you to create a scene using props, staging and lighting that creates a setting that will have photo on your wall that the family are proud to display for years to come. Even the most unsettled models will be put at ease and that perfect expression and pose captured.
Now that our children are back to school how many of us took the traditional ‘first day’ of the year photograph. Did it turn out as well as you hoped? Did you rush it and was the pose 'awkward' with clutter in the background?
Perhaps you should consider doing them again?
Like many I've amassed thousands of pictures over the years. The digital medium revolutionised our ability and freedom to take photos without huge costs but we don’t tend to do anything with them afterwards.
Images from family holidays to birthdays and weddings simply gather dust or rest in online backups in case we lose our own copies.
After a photo shoot John will provide you with selected prints or the collection on CD Rom or memory stick or he can do something more creative and produce Photo Books.
Traditionally people have created wedding albums but more people now have photo books produced. They are more engaging and tell the story with images and text. The professional result is more than simply an album it’s a coffee table conversation piece that people are proud to put on display.
It's not just for wedding photos and if you were to hand over to John your collection of images he can transform them into photo books.
Having become more affordable those pictures from holidays, school days or birthdays can become memorable moments, presented and packaged, and looked at again and again.
Not everyone will pose for the camera and if you are a parent with a child with autism then you really will want to contact John.
Involved with Irish Face of Autism, families can have the studio arranged to suit their child’s specific requirements.
"We go to the extremes to ensure that we create an environment that is suitable to their child’s needs and that the family are able to be comfortable and to be themselves. We have also been taught how to behave around autistic children so that we are not a discomfort to them."
"I’ve been contacted by parents from all over Ireland with many saying that they’ve never been able to capture a decent family photograph themselves. They’ve left my photo shoot having both enjoyed the experience and clutching a set of photographs that they never thought they’d be able to have."
If you have a child on the autism spectrum a quick call will tell you how John can help you.
This is not what you’re expecting to read and as a parent myself it’s something I struggled with on how best to write. I've been fortunate to not need this service but, like many who have actually used it, I will remember it exists should the need to recommend it arise.
John provides a photography service to those facing desperate times. ‘Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep’ is a group of photographers in Ireland, and abroad, who are called upon to capture a moment of love for a family losing their child.
John describes his involvement in a posting on their Facebook Page:
"I first heard about NILMDTS in 2013 when a friend of mine was unfortunately in the position to discover the service and later I contacted the team to see if I could help in anyway, probably with giving a donation or doing some sort of fund raising. I was shocked when they asked if I would apply to become a photographer for them as they were really in need of volunteer photographers."
Having seen some photos I understand why they are taken, why they are so precious, and what they capture. It's a credit to people like John Shortt for being there for these families.
There are so many on his website and Facebook Page so here we've extracted some headlines;
