Another dream profession for many young girls is to spend the day doing other people's nails.
Whilst most women learn the skill at a young age I imagine it's difficult to do one handed. To have someone else do it is so much easier.
Subtle elegance
It can take quiet a bit of time to apply false nails or a detailed design requires an artistic eye and skill especially to be able to do this for others.
Coordination
Jen has been resident and operating in Johnstown for a number of years. Before the interview we had briefly met when she'd visit to do my teenage daughter's nails. She'd bring into the house a bubbly infectious smile and warmth which instantly lifted my daughter's spirits even before starting. It's as if there's an excitement about what they're about to create.
Facebook Gallery
Jen's Facebook page is a catalog of the designs she's created. We've picked out only a few but there's a gallery for you to look through in more detail.
We caught up with Jen at a quiet moment to find out more:
"I trim and polish client’s nails and can apply nail extensions and create my own designs. I can visit clients 7 days a week at hours to suit them and it's usually in their own homes."
"Extremely busy. Clients going to church first communions and confirmations makes this time of year very busy.... which is great!"
Adding a detailed touch
"I simply love doing nails, love designing them and love the art. At a young age I’d practice on friends and family, or anyone visiting my parents who’d sit still long enough would find they’re nails transformed before they left."
"I've been professionally working for 2 years after training with Young Nails Course through Leah's Nails in Navan. I'd advise anyone to get the professional training it's very good."
Subtle elegance
"Yes, there's something about the excitement of having your nails done. It’s very satisfying for me and my clients to see their nails transformed and their smile start to beam. No matter how much of a bad day they might have been having it always ends with a happy smile."
"It’s also fulfilling for me to know that when a client sees the finished work I take a moment to appreciate that I created it, I did that for them. It’s a great feeling."
Ensuring the attached pieces stay.
"It’s very therapeutic having someone pamper you. I come to clients home, hotel, office…anywhere there’s a chair and table really. Some of my designs can take quite a while to complete and for the client to sit and chat it’s their opportunity to slow down after a busy day and catch their breath. To focus on what's coming up or what's been going on in their lives."
Attention to detail.
"Meeting new people is always interesting, more often than not they’re having their nails done for a special occasion, a night out or sometimes just because they want to. I get a glimpse of different lifestyles and share their excitement. It’s like reading a local glamour magazine about outfits, makeup, accessories and the main event their going to."
"I've always been chatty and I get to hear what's happening in the neighbourhood and it genuinely is interesting. I discover a lot about things their interested in and sometimes it starts a new interest for me."
"With flexible working hours I’m not limited to anyone else’s schedule. 24/7 sounds busy but I’ve time between appointments for the normal chores and jobs of family life."
Design Pad
"In my down time I read up on what others are doing and it’s a chance to practice new trends or different combinations and designs. We’re no longer limited to colours, shades, gloss or mat finishes. Now we’ve so many accessories and attachments."
"In the future I'd like to offer acrylic nails and also spray tans so there's a lot to be getting on with."

Jen's been busy this summer so we created a brief photo gallery to give you some new ideas.
