Within Johnstown most parents are aware that we have St Stephens Primary, Coláiste na Mí Secondary and St Mary’s Special Needs School.
For those younger children there are several preschools and within our estates there is a network of mum’s minding several children.
What happens if you’ve got young children or babies and simply need the comfort of others for support, a weekly chat and a chance to get out and socialise?
Some of our Residents had both the need for this and the energy to set up a group. Unfortunately there wasn’t and still isn’t a venue in Johnstown so they headed into Navan to set up Lámha Beag Parent and Toddler Group in the Solstice Theatre.
We caught up with the founder Joanne:
The name translates to "Little Feet."
"As a parent some mornings it can be difficult to get yourself motivated to do anything. So having a group of people in the same situation as you can make all the difference."
"It's been running for some years now and I often meet people around the town who stop and say ‘Thank You’ because, as some of them would say, it gave them back their sanity. It provides an informal setting, a social network to share ideas and experiences, seek and offer support and guidance. All the while the toddlers are in a warm, safe happy environment."
"As a new parent not having family living close by can leave you feeling very isolated. With this in mind, I sought out play groups in the local community. That’s how I got to know Sarah in Noah’s Ark parent & toddler group. When I was on maternity leave I brought my son to play and I got to meet other parents. When I returned to work my au pairs would bring my son who had a great time playing with other children, providing the au pairs the opportunity meet up.
A few years later after I had my daughter I was delighted to know I had somewhere to go of a morning to mix with other adults. The group finished up for the summer. After calling in many times the following September I was told it would not be continuing. So I approached the Solstice Arts Centre and asked could I set up a group myself.
That was four years ago Lámha Beag Parent and Toddler Group was born."
"Yes, it's run by myself with the brilliant support of Connie and we're 100% voluntary. We're supported by Meath County Council Childcare Committee and we're also members of the Early Childcare Ireand."
"Around 15 toddlers come along every Tuesday from 10am to 12 during school terms. We provide healthy snacks and water/juice. The parents can avail of tea/coffee crackers and cheese or biscuits. "
"We believe I creating a relaxed welcoming and friendly environment."
For the children it’s the experience of learning to play, share & explore. The older toddlers can also participate in themed play, dress up, arts & crafts.
"We have themed days such as Easter, St Patrick's Day, Mothers & Fathers Day, Halloween, Christmas and seasonal themed days."
"We've avail of events that are run through the Solstice such as the Monster Music Improv held in October 2016."
"We were fortunate to have Melissa Garlington visit us for a book launch and reading."
"Speech and Language therapy event with the HSE where parents were able to discuss children's speech and language development and simulation."
"Over the years we have made donations to Temple Street children’s hospital through their Bake Off initiative. We have also enjoyed a few social nights out toddlers free of course 😄 "
"The Architecture Workshop last August was fantastic. The presenter had the children building with pots then blocks and cones before mixing them to together. There was a slide show and book read and an exhibition all age appropriate and the children enjoyed learning through play and activities."
With an unusual name we discover O'Briens Fat Boys & Ladybirds has helped many within our community and fundraised for several organisations raising over €12,000
