July Edition 2017
With Wimbledon Season upon us many will be watching on TV and hopefully some will be inspired and consider taking up the sport, especially if the weather allows.
Within walking distance Navan Tennis Club nestles alongside Navan Rugby Club just beyond the Ardboyne Hotel.
Funded by its members the fairly new clubhouse is a fantastic modern facility standing proudly overlooking 5 all weather flood light courts.
With over 100 senior members and as many junior's it's a thriving club. Most evenings and weekends the courts are in use by all levels of players which is fantastic to watch from the viewing balcony of the clubhouse.
Navan has a significant Club and is affiliated to Tennis Ireland, Dublin Lawn Tennis Council, Leinster Provincial Town’s Tennis Council and Meath Sports Partnership (a Meath County Council initiative) so we popped in to find them getting ready for a full summer of tennis events.
We met up with Lorraine and Sally who are two actively involved Club Members to tell us more
"Tennis is a sport for life that can be played by people of all ages, standards, and fitness levels at both competitive, recreational and social levels. Our amenities enable tennis be played all year round, night or day, in all weather conditions."
Schools are actively encouraged to participate.
"A mix of veterans (Over 45), seniors (Over 35), adults, students and schoolchildren participate in tennis initiatives on a daily basis at the club. There is a similar ratio of females/males who participate in the sport at a competitive, recreational and social levels. "
The youth players.
"100% of the Club Membership play the sport – in the sport of tennis you rarely have any dormant members!!!"
"A key strategy in encouraging new members to join is our weekly tournament held 7.30pm every Tuesday night for men and Monday night for ladies between March and November. It's open to members and non-members and a great introduction event."
"These weekly meets are part of our Club Philosophy where we engage with the local community and encourage everyone to come along. No matter what your ability we can pair you with a suitable partner and it enables new players to integrate quickly into the social fabric of the Club, and generates a huge welcome for players considering joining.
"Tennis is a great way to involve the entire family in a game that suits all ages and all abilities. It gets people outside in the fresh air to have fun together and to get fit together."
"We run ladder tournaments which include Ladies/Mens singles and doubles, and also mixed doubles with details in the 'Members Area' of our website. These form the selection process for League teams so participation is recommended to avoid disappointment !
We enter teams into the various DLTC leagues that are run throughout the year.
Junior members participate in leagues and competition with more details in the 'Junior Tennis' section of our website.
We also hold regular blitz events and frequently host visiting local clubs for matches."
"We are the only club in Navan providing recognised tennis facilities and we’re are actively involved in the Schools Tennis Initiative. We're very excited about our 6 full weeks of tennis coaching for all ages throughout the school holidays."
Junior Summer Tennis Program
"We have professional, enthusiastic and encouraging coaches who are all qualified and Garda vetted in coaching Juniors and Adults."
"Within our team we're incredibly lucky to have Margaret Drew, a level 3 tennis coach and former winner of the Irish Open. She is one of the top 20 coaches in Ireland and a great influence in player development. She has even been coached by John McEnroe one of the great world class past players."
"Our emphasis is on outdoor fun, fitness and participation for everyone."
"Our Junior coaching programme is run for 3 terms during the year on Friday evenings Sept to June from 4pm - 9pm, If you are interested in coaching get in touch and we will get your child into the group that suits."
There is an adult coaching session that runs on Thursday evening at 9pm (exluding winter months). This is good fun and open to all levels. Members and non-members are welcome for €10 per session."
"Club Membership helps us to improve our facilities and by joining members receive discounted coaching and event entry and can enter into ladder and league matches. We encourage everyone to come and try tennis for a few weeks before joining.
Members can book court time and make use of the facilities throughout the day."
With cycle paths and reasonably quiet estates you'd think that there'd be more people using them. We find out more about where the cyclists are heading.
