The Hungerford Games is a series of excessively incredible trail races that take place in the scenic surroundings of Hungerford Recreation Area in the Manistee National Forest. There’s a 15-Mile race, as well as a 45K mini-utra and a 50-mile ultra. The event has a very cool small-race vibe, a uniquely arboreal feel, and delightful fall scenery!
Registration can be completed at Ultrasignup. Early registration is encouraged as spaces are limited. Also, it helps us order the right numbers and sizes of tee shirts.
The Hungerford Games are held on the last Saturday in September. (In 2026, that makes it September 26th.) Packet pickup is available from 5-7 the night before (that would be Friday evening), as well as starting at 5:45 on race day.
The 50-Miler starts first, with runners taking off at sunrise (this year, that's 7:36). If they finish before sunset (7:27), they’ll receive the world-famous Hungerford Hiking Stick.
The 45K and 15M take off at 8:15. Those times are all in the morning, of course. Except for the time listing the sunset; the sunset takes place in the evening.
The races start and finish at 15200 220th Ave. If you know the area, it’s always been PT Plus, but it’s now a Habitat for Humanity.
Parking on race day is at Trinity Church, just across the street from the starting line.
For packet pickup parking on Friday, you can park at 15200 220th.

We're in the process of updating our course to include less gravel, more trail, and more running through the woods on a beautiful fall day. We're finalizing our maps with the Forestry, and will update this soon!
The basics of the race stay the same: All races include a 5k stretch where you charge out of town and out into the forest. Then, the 15-Milers do a 8.8-mile loop, then head back to where they started. The 45K and 50-Milers have a larger, 21.9-mile loop. The 45K crew does it once before heading in, while the 50-milers do the loop twice before heading in.
All races will be 85% (or more) off-of-pavement.
There are six stations out on the course where you can refuel. You can also have a drop bag brought to any station you’d like. Every station has a wide variety of great food and drink: Gatorade and water, plus gels, chips, Oreos, peanut butter and jelly, pretzels, and other appropriate trail foods. Plus, every station has its own unique theme, whether that’s Halloween at Hungerford or Homecoming…often with its own special trail treats.
15-Miler racers will hit stations A, B, F, and then A again — making 4 stations all together.
The 45K crew will hit A, B, C, D, E, F, and A again — a total of 7 stations.
The 50M maniacs will see A, B, C, D, E, F, A, B, C, D, E, F, and A one last time. That's 13 stations.
Stations are between 3 and 5 miles apart, so you’ll never be too far from another pit stop.
Portajohns will be positioned at aid stations: A, C, and D. For help with all this, check out the Maps!
Your registration includes the always-stylish event t-shirt, all the fuel you need during the race, our unique wooden finishers medal (if you finish), as well as post-race refreshments. Anyone who finishes the 50-miler between sunup and sundown gets the coveted Hungerford Hiking Stick (or if you've already got yours, another notch on your previously-earned stick).
We typically also have bonus items unique to the particular year, and/or from some of our race partners. We tend to roll with a “pick your swag” out of the options we have laid out. There are also prior year shirts and/or swag available for purchase at discounted pricing.
The top three finishers, male and female (i.e. podium folks), overall will receive the chainsaw-carved Sassafras ‘Leaf of Glory’ — the finest trophy in all the land. Age group winners (18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60+) will receive a cool commemorative mug or pint glass - depending on the year.
Hungerford is all about variety. You’ll see hills and flat areas. You’ll be deep in the woods, then out in the sun. The terrain shifts from dirt to sand to grave, and back again.. We have fire roads, two-track, and some nice sections of single-track. For many, the highlight of the course is The Powerlines, a lovely and equally torturous stretch of hills on soft surfaces that you’ll be more than proud to have conquered. It’s generally recommended to wear trail running shoes for added traction and stability, although we’ve seen people be successful in all sorts…even carbon racers! Shoe “gators” aren’t particularly necessary, but we leave that to individual discretion.
For the 15-Miler and 45K, there is no time limit. We’ll be out there all day for the 50-Milers, so feel free to enjoy the race for as long as you’d like. 50-mile folks: If you want to earn your ultra-stick or get another notch on the one you already have, your limit is sunset on race day. However, if you anticipate finishing after sunset, have a headlamp on your person, or packed at an aid station. 50-mile runners who finish after sunset are still given one of our wooden medals, upon completion.
We need volunteers! Always. The more, the better. Just email hungerfordgames@gmail.com and let us know you're interested!
Big Rapids has several hotels which are all, as far as we’ve been able to tell, clean and comfortable. The most convenient are the Country Inn and Suites, the Hampton Inn, and the Holiday Inn Express.
For some reason - in most years - Ferris State schedules their homecoming for this same weekend, so sometimes they’ll fill up fast. If you want to rough it, you can always head out to Hungerford Hills Farm campground — or there’s a rustic site or three right here.
A little south of Big Rapids, there are also options near Cedar Springs (approx. 30 minutes from the race start).
AirBnB options abound as well.
If you can’t run this year, you can defer for free prior to July 1st, and for just $15 after that. Just send RD Ben $15 and he'll switch you into the next year's race on his master spreadsheet. Send him an email at hungerfordgames@gmail.com to get the process started.
Can my family and/or friends crew for me? Yes, they can! We do ask however, that crewing for all races be confined to stations: C, D, and F. These are the stations that have sufficient parking. We ask that crews DO NOT drive to stations A, B, or E. Your vehicle will thank you, as will the rescue crew that doesn't have to save you.
For those in the 50-mile, you may have a pacer join you right around the end of the first loop. Have them meet you at Station F, or right after you come off the single track at the Mountain Bike Trailhead.
For the 50-milers, we'll happily bring out your drop bag to any stations along the course. There will be bins labeled for each aid station at the Start/Finish line prior to the race. Just make sure to get your bag in there by 7:00 a.m. and we will make sure it's waiting for you out on the course.
For safety and insurance reasons, dogs are not allowed on the course. Also, although many people find dogs adorbs... one of the RDs is scared of dogs. We won’t tell you which one.
Additionally: dogs near the start/finish area must be leashed.
We get asked this question a ton. You can find great approximations of the distances between each aid station using our Course Maps page.
All previous years' results are up on the Ultrasignup page. Every year, we work to get results up and emailed out the morning after the race is finished.
This event takes place on the Huron-Manistee National Forests under recreation special use permit.
