These forests were Akira Miyawaki's idea to create dense and rapidly growing forests. They can be planted by anyone and let anyone act locally to fight global warming. It is ideal for schools and getting students, parents and teachers equally involved in planting a forest. It can also be easily implemented by companies, associations or entire towns.
The requirements are as follow
1 - determine the plant species native to a given area. For example in France
2 - improve the soil by mixing in organic material
3 - plant seedlings of native trees and understory plants in a dense, mixed manner (about three seedlings per square meter) meant to simulate a natural forest
4 - remove weeds from the site for up to three years after planting, if necessary.
5 - After that, the grove is left to its own devices. Due to the dense planting, the seedlings grow quickly as they compete for sunlight.
