A Carlsbad Local
(since 1944)
While many coastal communities throughout California have been inundated with unseen investors seeking to turn a quick profit, this property remains in the hands of a family that has been a fixture in Carlsbad since 1942. That's when Natalie and Veblen Vermilyea brought their five daughters to California from Omaha, Nebraska.
Natalie was Carlsbad's first city employee, later becoming the city's first lady of law enforcement—quite literally; she was the first female officer in the city's police department. She and "Veb" raised eight children in the quiet seaside community as the city grew up around them. Her profound love for the city and its people has carried well beyond her career in service.
Four generations of Vermilyeas still visit the property regularly. They pour their hearts into making sure the property continues to bring families together, whether for adventure or just to unwind.
We hope you treasure the city of Carlsbad like we do.

Surf and Ski?
Make a day out of it.
For the explorer seeking a place to call home for a month, The Heart of the Village is the perfect spot to enjoy all San Diego has to offer. And if the timing is right, you could be the first of your friends to surf and ski on the same day.
The best chance to surf & ski is November through April, as most southern California ski resorts are open during this time. Some resorts offer night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays; check the resort schedule ahead of time.
Big Bear/Snow Summit (about 2.5-hour drive);
SnowValley/Mountain High (just over two hours driving)
