“Somehow, I Knew I’d Found the Right Server for Me”: An Interview with Charmics
30 Sep 24 | Jaron_the_Marmot & Charmics

Our lovely Charmics, better known as Charm, sat down with our also-very-lovely Froobian Times reporter, Jaron.

Charm is a member of staff who joined FroobWorld on the 27th of June, 2016. Known for his farms and being a mad scientist, he was the creator of the public enderman farm.

What brought you to FroobWorld?

Before joining Froobworld, I played on another SMP server for versions beta 1.9 to release 1.6, or thereabouts. When that server eventually died, I took a break from Minecraft for a while before starting to look for another server that could provide a similar experience. After many, many false starts, including a stint with Skyblock, as well as trying out mod packs with friends, I finally filtered a server list for semi-vanilla servers with a smaller but dedicated player-base. Froobworld came up, and in that moment, I knew that I was on to something.

Back when you joined, what was the atmosphere like?

It was a quieter time on the server, with around one or maybe two dozen total active regulars. We also had a short application process for new players before they could play, which did a great job of keeping out the riff-raff. Despite that, there were still a couple of people online most of the time, and it was really easy to have conversations and make friends with everyone you met!

Who was the earliest person you bonded with on froob?

That's hard to say. I actually joined more or less "with" another close friend, so we stuck together. I certainly made a few other friends early on, but it wasn't actually until the next map when I teamed up on a handful of projects with Delirious888, including an experimental slime farm and an over-engineered creeper farm that barely worked due to the way mob spawning worked at the time. There were a ton of other people who I also worked with, but there are too many to list here!

Have you ever joined a town? If so, which ones and why?

Sort of. I built a house in Endaria, which was less a community town and more of a  town-themed build that someone else was doing. Up until that point, everything I built was mostly function over form, and I hadn't tried building anything strictly "nice" since originally getting the game, but I was really happy with how the little home I built turned out (through hours of painful effort and a lot of rebuilding), and it has inspired me to continue doing cozy builds every so often, even if they're outside of my normal skill set.

What moment stands out most to you on froob?

That's a hard question! I've been on Froobworld off and on for years, and a lot of my favorite memories were made while playing it. Team projects, personal achievements, funny moments, close friends... It's impossible to pick something out! But I keep coming back to those very first moments, when I found the server tucked away in a list, and logged on for the first time. Somehow, I knew I'd found the right server for me. I'd found a home.

Do you have any future plans/projects?

On the next map, I really want to focus on smaller-scale projects. I think I share a problem that a lot of people have, where it's easy to be overly ambitious. Instead of making big farms and getting bulk resources, I'd like to focus on the little things, especially since Mojang keeps adding new things to the game which make that more and more interesting. I'll still need *some* Redstone stuff, though.

Anything else you would like to ask the Froobian Times readers?

Yes, I have one very important question for everyone. Would you sign a petition to disable phantoms? ;)
