A Beginner's Guide to the Wiki

The code used for the home page of the Wiki!

So, you want to get started editing on the FroobWorld Wiki, but you don't have a clue where to start.

This is your guide to the basics of editing using our MediaWiki system and how to further expand your abilities to become a master wiki editor!

Getting Started

The first, and most important, step to editing on the Froobworld Wiki is creating an account. Without an account, you cannot edit or create new pages and can only browse through the many paragraphs of Froobian lore. To create an account, click the "Anonymous" drop down menu in the top right. Here, you will see two options: Create an account, and log-in. Click on "Create and account" and you will be brought to a page where you will fill out the required information. There are a few key fields you must pay attention to however, the username and discord passcode boxes. When filling out your username, enter your in-game username. This is extremely important for tracking editor changes in the future. Finally, when you get to the box where you have to enter the discord passcode, head to our discord welcome channel, and enter the hidden code (dill-outward ).

Now that you have your account, you can start creating and editing your first wiki page! Generally, the most recommended starting point is creating your user-page. You can view other user pages here. To create your bland page, head to the search bar at the top of the page, and type in your username. Whatever you type in this box will be what your user-page is titled. After entering your username, you should see a "There were no results matching the query" message. Above this message, you should see your user name in red with a message like "Create the page "[Your Username]" on this wiki!" Click on your red name, and congratulations, you have created your first wiki page!

Basic Syntax

Our wikipedia is based on the MediaWiki system (the one wikipedia.org uses and created). If you have experience with editing on Wikipedia(s) before, this should be a refresher. To everyone else, this will server as your starting guide editing your user-page.

Headings

To start, you should create a heading. This can be titles "early life" or simply your username. You can have as many headings as you need in a wiki article, these can help keep your page clean and easily navigable.

To create a heading, use this formatting:

== [Heading title] ==

*[Your text here]

This will create a large heading with a bullet point of text underneath it. If you would like a smaller sub-heading, you can add additional "=" to each side of the title. Just be sure you keep each side even (4 on one side, must have 4 on the other).

Text Lines

After you create your heading, of course you now want to add text relating to the title! To do this, you can follow some of the following formats to create new lines:

Using a "*" creates a bullet point, this is the standard

Using a "#" starts a numbered list

Using a ":" to start a new line with no bullet or number

Text formatting

When using document drafting programs, like Word or Google Docs, they usually have a handy tool bar on top with bold, italicize, and underline. You can also use shortcuts like CRTL+B to bold. This is not how the wiki works. To format text like this, you must surround it in apostrophes.

''[Text]'' = Italic

'''[Text]''' = Bold

'''''[Text]'''''' = Bold+Italic

To underline or strikethrough, you have to use specific starting and ending "book ends" of sorts. Some examples are below.

<u>[Text]</u> = Underlined

<s>[Text]</s> = Strikethrough

This quick guide should give you a starting point, if you would like to expand you skills further, see the next section of this article!

Other Tips and Tricks

  • Use the MediaWiki "Help" page!!! This page Gives you everything you need to create a flawless wiki article. The "Editing" category covers a lot more basics, but the "Advanced Editing" category is where you can learn to insert pictures, tables, sub-pages, and so much more. If you have some free time, definitely read up on some of these.

  • Log your edits. Before saving changes to a page, take the time to detail your changes in the "Summary" section above the save changes button. This will show up in the page logs and can help with moderating the wiki. It is also just interesting to look back on your edits and see when and what you were doing in the past.

  • Look at other community member's pages to gain insight on how others edit. If you are struggling with formatting on your article, take a look at a related article and see how others did it. This does not mean copy things verbatim, but if you see a feature in a page you like, look at the source and see if you can incorporate this feature into your own articles.
