My name is Holly and I am a digital curator, writer and professional fat lady. Museums in the modern era have increasingly become aware of a need to become more representative of the society they exist within. This is evident in increased community-based practice and policies outlining commitments to equality, diversity and inclusion. However, one group of marginalized people remains on the outside of this inclusive practice: fat people.
I researched the representation of fat people in museum collections for my masters thesis, one of the very few pieces of research into the topic. My instagram page @the.fat.museum highlights objects from museum collections and the stories they tell about fat people.
