Synopsis: The almost-human son of "Brundlefly" searches for a cure to his mutated genes while being monitored by a nefarious corporation that wishes to continue his father's experiments.
Intention: The Fly is most definitely in my top 6 favorite movies of all time. On top of being a seminal body-horror classic, the film has a heart and sense of humor that few other horror films possess. I can't say the same for the sequel!
In all seriousness, I feel like the sequel doesn't get the credit it deserves. In some ways it offers more tragic setpieces than anything from the preceding film. The effects are impeccable, thanks to director Chris Walas, who ran effects work for the 1986 Fly film, Gremlins, and Return of the Jedi. However, there are no performances that are as magnetic as any from the preceding film, and it unfortunately can't hope to match its breakneck pacing.
So, my goal was to maintain The Fly II's strengths while cutting as much fat as possible in order to make the film more engaging. This was definitely a struggle to make, in terms of both creative and technical challenges.
Change List:
After the Fox logo, I include audio from the first film where Ronnie reveals she's pregnant.
After the helicopter lands at Bartok Industries, I cut to Ronnie's dream from the first movie with her and Barnes in the hospital before cutting to The Fly II Scene were Bartok approaches the viewing area, and then back to the first film where Ronnie births a maggot-like creature. Instead of showing that effect though, I cut in footage from The Fly II at the point where Ronnie tells Bartok that he promised "it wasn't going to be like this." I cut around the other actress's close ups to hopefully make the switch more believable
Cut after Bartok tells his board that he answers only to God - he only rephrases this statement afterwards and that causes it to lose some of its punch
Cut the scene where Martin looks at the flies in sector 4
Removed grown Martin being amused by a toilet flushing
When Bartok gives Martin his father's tapes, I play the whole original deleted scene that was originally sourced, including Geena Davis's footage while she's interviewing Jeff Goldblum's Seth Brundle
Removed the country track while Martin and Beth work on the telepods, then shortened the montage and replaced the music with Howard Shore's score from the first film
Added more of Shore's score when Martin teleports the kitten with Beth
Shortened Martin and Beth's sex scene by one sequence
Cut Bartok scolding Scorby
Cut the entire hackneyed return of Barnes from the first film - he offers no help and one bad pun
Cut Beth checking into the hotel and Martin trying to run into traffic
Shortened Martin's hatching scene by one shot
Shortened Scorby's search for Martin
Cut the team outside the telepod room trying to cut their way inside
Cut the shot of Martinfly's face when Scorby is looking for him up the stairs
