Synopsis: Legends collide as Godzilla and Kong, the two most powerful forces of nature, clash on the big screen in a spectacular battle for the ages.
Intentions: I'm excited to present my net kaiju double feature - Survival of the Fittest, a combination of both modern Godzilla vs Kong films. Godzilla vs Kong 2021 serves as the first chapter and underwent the most change. My goal in approaching the Legendary Monsterverse films has been to limit any human drama that isn't inherently tied to the kaiju plot. In Godzilla 2014, cutting Bryan Cranston's role hardly impacts the narrative, and allows for Aaron Taylor Johnson's part to be dramatically limited. 2019's Godzilla King of the Monsters provided a more integral storyline with Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Millie Bobby Brown, so their arc remained, although with some tweaking for the sake of pacing.
Millie Bobby Brown returned in Godzilla vs Kong, but I found that the inclusion of her plot was unnecessary in moving the story along, so I cut her, Kyle Chandler, Brian Tyree Henry, and Julian Dennison entirely from the edit. The only major scene lost involves an explanation behind Mechagodzilla and Ghidorah's ties to its creation, but I feel like it being piloted within a giant kaiju skull is enough to hint at this. The true protagonist of the film is Kong anyhow, but by reducing the human cast, more focus is placed on Rebecca Hall as Ilene Andrews and Kaylee Hottle as her daughter. Watched alone, the first chapter of Survival of the Fittest runs 28 minutes shorter with a 1 hour, 25 minute runtime.
Godzilla x Kong from 2024 acts as the second chapter of the edit and honestly, I think this film has offered the best balance of kaiju and human drama, with some of the storytelling conveyed in the giant monster action, along with the most compelling human characterizations. Brian Tyree Henry is included this time around, although allusions to his direct involvement with Mechagodzilla are cut. Some excess humor that he and Dan Stevens offer are limited in the edit, but otherwise only I trimmed some action and conversations for the sake of pacing, resulting in 9 minutes cut and a final runtime of 1 hour, 45 minutes.
Combined as a double feature, I cut additional footage from ending and opening credits, creating a version that runs just over 3 hours.
