Synopsis: Ten years after the events of RoboCop, RoboCop has become outdated and tired. Delta City (formerly Detroit) is now considered the safest place on Earth, and he is no longer viewed as particularly necessary.
Intentions: This was, hands down, the most challenging fanedit I've worked on at this point, but it was equally as fun.
RoboCop is quite probably my favorite movie of all time. I saw it when I was far too young, but it somehow never scarred me and my appreciation for the film has only grown as I've aged and grew to better understand its mature themes. I was an avid fan of the cartoon - Alpha Commando, but The Sci-Fi Channel original miniseries Prime Directives was the first "sequel" to Robocop I had seen - it took me until my early teen years to check out its film sequels.
Although my memories of it are foggy, some incredible concepts that never left my mind, although I could still recognize its drawn-out runtime and the lack of budget.
Change List:
Focused on cleaning up the action because every dramatic act is abysmally edited. Every impressive shot is broken up into a dozen cuts recorded from two or three different angles, making for incomprehensible action. I cleaned each of these up, making for much more impactful, direct action sequences.
In terms of overall plot, I removed the majority of Dr. Ed Hobbley's scenes as they did not greatly impact the plot, and the original screenwriter's intention of the character was mangled, yet again, but the series' editing. Aside from that, any shot that lingered too long, any sequence bogged down by exposition needed to explain previous miniseries episode plots, and all dialogue that failed to drive the narrative forward, were all excised, narrowing a 6 hour story into 3 hours, 25 minutes.
Cosmetically, I've added film grain to the footage to help elevate the cheap Sci-Fi Channel digital-grade quality, and I've spliced in a dozen songs from the RoboCop 1987 soundtrack throughout the cut to help heighten drama and suspense. There was a spaghetti-western inspired piece that played numerous times throughout the original miniseries, no matter the context of the scene, but it can be found used only once in my edit.
