Synopsis: Robocop saves the day once more. This time the half man/half robot takes on ruthless developers who want to evict some people on "their" land.
Intentions: Robocop 3 is a strange film. It gets a lot of hate, and I can't say that all of it is unearned. Nothing against Robert John Burke, but he ain't no Peter Weller, and his recasting, along with the lightened tone only serve to drive a wedge between Robocop 3 and its preceding films.
I find it unfair to call it an outright bad film - a bad Robocop film, sure, but not a bad movie overall. Compared to Robocop 2, its story is far more coherent and emotionally driven, with Delta City nearing it's completion at the cost of leaving countless families driven out of their homes. Also, it's shot more cinematically than its predecessor, giving the film a hint of atmosphere, which I credit to Fred Dekker, who also directed Night of the Creeps and Monster Squad.
My initial goal was to trim Robocop 3 down and attempt to remove some of its weaker moments of humor, but then MovieFan0512 showed me a clip of Peter Weller inserted into the film's footage. I immediately reached out to its author, DeepFaker, who gave me his blessing to include his footage in the edit, and provided the original footage he created. So, I'm proud to present a fanedit of Robocop 3 that serves a more worthwhile continuation, and that when paired with my Robocop 2 edit, the trilogy can now work more akin to original Indiana Jones films than, well, the theatrical releases of the Robocop Trilogy.
Change List:
This won't be as detailed as a cutlist because numerous edits involve one of the four categories:
I won't give all the blame to the child actor in this film, but I will say that acting ability or not, this was not a film production that could produce a great performance, so, I cut out as much of her unnecessary dialogue throughout. Only a minute, 44 seconds in and I already started cutting her dialogue down. I'm not writing down every instance of that in the cut list.
Another broad correction - nearly every explosion is filmed from multiple angles, which is common for best coverage, but they're edited in such as where an explosion begins, then cuts to a different angle where the explosion has yet to begin, only to repeat the same concussive visual. I worked to trim these additional moments, allowing the explosion to continue more seamlessly from one angle to the next.
Oh my goodness pacing - this movie may be relatively short but it is bloat-ted. For about every third scene, I've either trimmed its beginning or ending off, usually due to weak humor.
So many messages are on the nose, and this is coming from a less than subtle series. It's not necessary for the onscreen rebels and fascists to blatantly state their case, however, and broad statements pertaining to the film's themes are cut
Otherwise, here are other prominent, more specific cuts:
I know I said I wouldn't mention the kid, but this is too critical to leave out - there is no reference to ED-209 being as loyal as a puppy. I use his engine-break down sound effect to replace this dialogue
Removed the cops chasing the rebels to make it seem like they were casualties of ED-209
Cut Lewis's reference to Splatterpunks, and every other mention of the gang's name - this is not a threatening gang name
Removed Murphy directly disobeying his captain's orders to save Murphy
Eliminated the doctor smashing Robo's inhibitor chip since we already know it isn't installed - he asked Lewis to call him Murphy
Removed the face morph between Murphy's wife, Lewis, and Dr. Lazarus - I always found the scene unnecessary and unsettling
Cut Robocop questioning a Rehab officer after using his flamethrower & added a stock scream as he's hit - hoping this helps imply that he was terminated
Removed the Rehab officer's gun dancing in the air after Robo shoots it from his hands
Eliminated the chase between McDagget and Robocop in the pink pimpmobile
Added a snorting sound when the kid is watching the news anchor, in an attempt to make it seem as though he were sniffing nose candy
