Synopsis: After waking from a four-year coma, a former assassin wreaks vengeance on the team of assassins who betrayed her.
Intention: I don't know if I'd say that Kill Bill is the best film directed by Quentin Tarantino, but it's definitely my favorite. When my dad was on strike at work and we stayed up really late watching both movies back to back. I had seen the first volume but it was my first time watching the second - watching the whole story was a hypnotic and unforgettable experience, and I never considered watching the volumes separately again.
Fast forward 20 years and I was elated to hear that Tarantino's legendary Whole Bloody Affair edit was going to screen in theaters. Knowing that the story was originally meant to be conveyed in a single film instead of two volumes, I was enormously curious to see how the narrative would be rearranged as originally intended.
To my disappointment, The Whole Bloody Affair presented the story largely unchanged, with the exception of some new and uncut scenes. While Kill Bill is my favorite Tarantino film and I always watch both volumes together, I'll admit that the pacing does suffer at points due to how the halves are presented. The first volume ends with the bombastic sword battle between the Bride and the Crazy 88 gang. It makes sense to end a film with this sequence, but when immediately followed up by the more reflective and narrative-heavy second volume, the pacing stutters.
I decided to experiment with the story in an attempt to provide a singular film experience with a consistent pace that ramps up more naturally as the story progresses. I also decided to take that end product and create something that could be considered a theatrical release. So, like the Lord of the Rings films, I have a "theatrical" and "extended" edition of Kill Bill.
Change List:
The Whole Bloody Baliscon Cut
Added a new title card reading "Kill Bill" without the volume distinction, along with new chapter cards throughout the edit
Changed the order of The Deadly Viper Assassin Squad cast members during the opening credits, rearranging them in the order of their deaths in this edit, chronologically
After the opening credits, I continued as usual with the sequence of the bride killing Vernita - with an added Deadly Viper title card, but I cut her crossing Vernita off her list afterwards.
Continued on with the flashbacks of the bride in her coma through to her trying to wiggle her big toe
Added in the entire chapel scene from volume 2 in lieu of the anime sequence devoted to O-Ren Ishi
Cut back to the Bride moving her toes before getting her new sword forged from volume 1.
Cut to the majority of the start of volume 2 with Bill talking to Bud - with an added Deadly Viper title card, cutting out the start of their dialog where they discuss how the bride wiped out the crazy 88 gang.
Continued on with Bud's work life and then the bride's pursuit of Bud before he shoots her and buries her alive.
Added the deleted scene with Bill vs Damoe once she's buried before the scene with her and Bill talking by the campfire
Continued with the Pai Mei flashback and her escaping her grave and battling Elle.
Once the bride is finished with Bud and Elle, I cut to the origin of O-Ren, using the uncut anime sequence. The edit continues with The Bride flying to Japan to combat the Crazy 88 gang (with the color sequences added from the Japanese release) and her killing Lucy Liu. I cut the moment when O-Ren is censored saying the bride's name because it's been revealed at this point. I also added a shot of the Deadly Vipers fading from color to black and white to replace when the Bride is crossing off O-Ren's name from her hit list
Added the uncut scene of the Bride cutting Sofie's other arm off
Cut the recap of volume 1 from the start of volume 2
Cut the secondary, black and white end credits
The "Theatrical" Baliscon Cut
Cut the scene with Bud's job at the strip club
No Damoe deleted scene
Cut the Bride walking through the desert before returning to Bud's trailer
Cut O-Ren's anime backstory
Cut Gogo's role from the film
Cut the scene with Esteban Vihaio
Cut half of the Lisa Wong flashback
