Synopsis: A teenage girl once possessed by a demon finds that it still lurks within her. Meanwhile, a priest investigates the death of the girl's exorcist.
Intention: This movie is...unfocused to put it kindly, a mess to put it honestly. One of the worst sequels of all time, if not one of the worst movies ever made. Where the original Exorcist is timeless, this film seems not meant for any time. The pseudo science fails to parallel the horrific realism of the first film, and its religious themes are similarly hazy.
My goal was to hone the unfocused story and develop the pacing to match the quicker cuts of William Friedkin's original film, along with William Peter Blatty's third in the series. Innumerous scenes are eliminated for the sake of bringing a more serious attitude to the overall film. Additionally, I worked to heighten the film's few scares, removing frames, readjusting audio, and rearranging cuts to lessen the effects' shoddy quality.
Change list:
Replaced opening credits and swapped soundtrack with Exorcist III's end credits.
Cut down on the opening exorcism, particularly some of the flame effects.
Removed Regan's opening tapdancing scene. The exorcism instead cuts directly to Doctor Tuskin working in the hospital.
Removed reference to Father Merrin being a Satanist.
Cut overt reference to Regan repressing her memory of the first film's events. Her apparent amnesia and the need to keep her memory repressed do not play a part in this edit.
Eliminated Regan crossing her eyes when wearing the brain machine.
Removed most of the talk of tone while Dr. Tuskin works with the brain machine since the pseudo science isn't important (or interesting) in the story.
Reduced much of Father Lamont's sync with Dr. Tuskin. Cut the majority of the layered scene with Regan helping Tuskin along seen transparent through Father Merrin battling Regan. I keep one moment to demonstrate what Lamont sees while under sync, along with the closeup of Merrin's and Tuskin's faces while they struggle to breathe. I cut Regan's prompt for Tuskin to forget the what she saw during the sync. All of this is in an effort to make the scene more serious, and to cast Regan in a somewhat more dubious light.
Minimized Regan's first dream of Kokumo.
Elimited reference to Regan's mother being gone - this dialogue only serves to highlight her absence, not explain it away.
Attempted to keep Father Lamont's romantic inclinations a secret during his discussion with Tuskin.
Added Tubular Bells to the main flashback with Father Merrin
Pitched down Pazuzu's voice.
Added a cross-fade transition between the cuts of possessed and normal Kokumo to make his exorcism much smoother.
Cut the shot of the leopard when Kokumo roars, but replaced his yell with the actual cat's roar.
Removed Regan's conversation with Susan about being possessed by a demon (Don't worry, he's gone now!)
Cut Regan and Lamont's dialogue at the museum about ESP and the world mind since this plays no part in the story.
No more tap dancing when Lamont's chased out of the abbot's village.
Eliminated Kokumo mentioning that he'll spit a leopard if Pazuzu appears
Cut the scene where Regan "slips" out of the hospital, just by telling the nurse that "it's okay."
Removed Dr. Tuskin bathing children.
Removed the line, "Pazuzu's Regan is the only Regan."
