Synopsis: Laurie Strode confronts her long-time foe, Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.
Intentions: I love - love, love, love - Halloween 2018. Prior to this, I was a kind of fan who didn't consider anything after Halloween 3 canon, so after Rob Zombie brutalized the franchise, 2018 was a breath of fresh air. Then Halloween Kills came out and I did not love it. I enjoyed many of the isolated sequences, as well as the overarching narrative of how fear can turn a town mad, but the film overall feels bloated and the messages hit the audience over the head.
So, my intention is to create a single narrative detailing, "the night he came home...again," combining the films and drastically rearranging scenes to establish a more cohesive film that flows more naturally as a single narrative. Additionally, the film opens with the closing moments of Halloween 1978 and leads into the opening of Halloween 2, where Dr. Loomis investigates the spot where Michael Myers' body fell, and warns the neighbor that he, "Doesn't know what death is!" From there, a condensed version of the flashback that opens Kills plays out, leading to the opening of the 2018 film itself.
Scenes involving Big John and Little John Tommy and his group are placed within the narrative of 2018 to help set up their characters more naturally, rather than introducing them all 2+ hours into the edit's overall runtime.
Goals -
These two films tell a better story together than apart. While 2018 is a fantastic standalone sequel, in my opinion, there are concepts dealt with in Kills that merit inclusion, despite that movie's unbalanced tone and pacing.
Karen is not portrayed as an incredibly sympathetic character, with her over the top, blunt attitude against Laurie - I sought to be more selective with her dialogue to help make her stance clear without sacrificing her character's likeability
These films feel the need to repeatedly remind the audience of the 1978 film's events, which makes sense as a legacy sequel, but when these instances stretch towards the end of the runtime, these lines feel less and less natural and necessary
Similarly, these films lean on the "tell" when it handily delivers on the "show." For example, we don't need to hear Sartain saying that he's Michael Myers' has been his life's obsession when the film's narrative naturally unveils that this is the case.
Change List:
The film starts with the end of Halloween 1978, starting with Laurie telling Tommy to call for help. The film continues on to its ending before picking up with the start of Halloween 2, where Loomis searches the spot where Michael fell before uttering the famous line to the neighbor, "You don't know what death is!"
This cuts directly to Halloween Kills, where Officer Hawkins is in pursuit of Michael.
Eliminated all scenes with young Lonnie, along with the jump scares in the Myers house.
After Michael is surrounded, the film cuts to 40 years later at Smith's Grove, where the podcasters interview Dr. Sartain and visit Michael
I limit the chatter at the start of the scene that does little other than to set tone, and I limit the amount of narration that the podcasters partake in so that only serves to recap the story that the audience can infer from this edit's narrative
The opening credits progress as normal, but with the sequence from Kills instead of 2018 (I never liked the fact that the 2018 film was only called Halloween, which is really confusing when trying to write a description for an edit that involved both the 78 and 18 films)
After Allyson's dad gets peanut butter on his penis, he immediately leaves the scene with none of his subsequent dialogue
Removed Karen outright lying to her daughter about her conversation with Laurie
Cut Dave's line about Laurie's "brother" who, "cold-blooded murdilated all those teenagers," in case anyone wants to go into this movie considering anything between the second and seventh film canon. I mean, you can definitely play it that way where Laurie gave birth to Karen but ultimately lost custody of her, then had Danielle Harris's Jamie before ultimately faking her death and trying to skip town, ultimately settling in California to have the whatever his face Josh Hartnett played. The results of H20 would result in Laurie returning to Haddonfield to await Michael's likely return. We can dream, right?
When Allyson questions Laurie, I cut after she mentions the Boogeyman because her subsequent lines only serve to reconfirm information the audience has already learned in prior scenes - Laurie prioritized her fear over her family
Someone as knowledgeable in firearms as Laurie wouldn't dry fire her shotgun
Cut the high five between Allyson's dad and boyfriend, along to the inference to how Bonnie and Clyde met their end
Eliminated the second instance of Karen lying to Allyson about Laurie, along with numerous instances of her over-the-top attitude in the overall scene
Reduced the dialogue about dancing between Lumpy and his dad
Cut Lumpy finding the cop who told him to run
Removed the podcasters at the graveyard recounting Michael's first murder
Removed Laurie's surprise visit at Karen's house
Placed Big John and Little John's intro from Kills after the one-shot sequence of Michael stalking Haddonfield
I cut all the dancing from the Johns sequence, along with the reference to barf
Removed Dave's excursion with the motorcycle in the garage
Cut Julian saying, "Oh shit," when Michael appears - he's offered enough comedic relief at this point
Placed the first bar scene with Tommy and his group after Michael's attack on Vicky, leading to Laurie and Hawkins investigating the attack after the bar sequence
Trimmed much of the antagonism between Tommy's group and the doctor and nurse couple.
Cut the flashbacks to the 78 film when Tommy introduces each of his gang
In the next scene, I reduced the sequence of Hawkins searching for Michael
Cut Sartain's joke about sitting still
Removed the meta reference of Laurie calling Sartain the, "New Loomis," and his reference to Hawkins being the deputy who stopped Loomis from killing Michael
Cut Hawkins saying it was a dumb thing to pray for Laurie to want to kill Michael herself
Eliminated Cameron's friend trying to excuse him coming on to Allyson with horniness
Removed Karen frantically berating the cops and Laurie shouting to calm her down
Cut Laurie saying that Michael has been waiting for her and she's been waiting for him - this is an out of place, trailer line, imo
Cut Sartain claiming that Hawkins killed Michael after hitting him with a car - he's a doctor and should be able to identify Michael's condition better
Eliminated Sartain momentarily wearing Michael's mask
Removed the exchange between the police officers about banh mi sandwiches
Cut Allyson freaking out over Laurie's shooting targets
The final scene of 2018 cuts to the scene in Kills where Cameron is walking from the dance, trying to call his friend, only to find Hawkins's injured.
Removed Hawkins saying he's the one that has to get Michael when Cameron finds him stabbed
This cuts to the bar scene when Cameron calls his dad, Lonnie
This scene cuts back to Laurie, Karen, and Allyson in the truck on their way to the hospital, learning that fire trucks are en route to Laurie's home
Cut Bracket recognizing Laurie Strode at the hospital
Shortened Laurie's surgery
Cut the Shonda's husband's line about his mother-in-law using his sleep apnea mask, his mention of having wine and cheez-its, and his description of Michael as a man in a monster mask
Cut Michael stepping on Shondra's toy drone
Removed instance of the news showing Michael's face - if this is the case, it is far less likely for the other patient to be confused for him since most people would be able to recognize Michael Myers
Cut Marion saying, out of the blue, Evil dies tonight. I'm going to see with how many of these I can get away with cutting
Removed the overt cut of the other inmate running away from the car crash after the confrontation with Tommy in hopes that this would help retain the plot point's mystery a while
Eliminated Cameron's over the top spiel to Karen about Michael's evil infecting their families for years
Cut Allyson's flashbacks to fighting Michael during the 2018 film
Cut Lonnie's line about, "sassy tackle"
Cut Allyson's on the nose line about being the one to hunt Michael tonight
Removed Marion's reference to Loomis
Cut the husband and wife's banter about shooting guns
Reduced the kids' comedic banter when Lindsey warns them to go home
Cut Marion's idiotic decision to lock the car doors after Michael already shattered the window
Cut Marion's line, "This is for Dr. Loomis"
Drastically shortened Michael's search for Lindsey in the park
Cut Laurie's joke for the nurse to give Hawkins a "double"
Removed any scene where security chief Bracket is focused on or talks
Shortened Tommy's speech at the hospital and cut two instances of, "Evil dies tonight"
Cut Laurie's line, "Let him take my head as I take his"
Greatly reduced the hunt for Michael by the big and little Johns
Cut Tommy's chant of, "Evil dies tonight," in the hospital, followed by the crowd repeating the line
Removed Bracket's infamous line, "Now he's turning us into monsters"
Eliminated Hawkins' flashback of his partner taking his gun to cover up the accidental homicide from the start of the film
Eliminated Hawkins' flashback to the events of the 2018 film when Sartain attacked him
Removed Laurie's flashback to being attacked in the 78 film
Removed the conversation between Karen and Lonnie after the hospital incident
Cut Karen reminding Michael about killing his sister
Cut Karen's second, "Gotcha" moment
Cut Bracket's line about how, "Everyone's entitled to one good scare
Removed inter cuts of Karen and Allyson during Michael's beatdown
Rearranged the final sequence so that after Michael's beat down, Karen goes into his family home, then we see him resurrect before returning for her
