Synopsis: Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.
Intentions: I wasn't a fan of the 2013 remake when it released though, the film looked muddy and the story, which was a unique element to include in the franchise at that point, felt bloated. So, after over a decade, I decided to take the Uncut Version and refine the experience to eliminate unnecessary or awkwardly delivered dialogue, adjust the color palette to make the film enjoyable to look at, and tie some loose threads to the original film trilogy.
Change List:
Removed the prologue to give the film a slow burn start like the original
Shortened the awkward exchange between Olivia the nurse and Natalie, David's girlfriend
Shortened the conversation between Mia and David, removing the cross your heart line
Removed the cat jumpscare with David - how is there a cat jumpscare in a 2013 film?
Added a little reference to Ash during Mia and David's conversation in her old room
Cut Olivia's line, "David there's something you need to know," instead directly cutting from him saying that Mia seems fine to Eric's expression of smug disagreement
Removed reference to prologue when David and Eric search the basement
Trimmed Mia's encounter in the Woods, just as I did Cheryl's in the first film
Eric's a bothersome character, I reduced his sardonic responses before helping David in the cellar
Cut Olivia's line saying Mia's "totally psychotic," after she's been puked on, and Natalie's stiff callback referring to what happened to Mia's eyes
Cut Eric's lines after saying he doesn't think they're dealing with a panic attack - he doesn't need to refer to the witchcraft in the basement for the audience to understand the film's plot
Restructured the uncut version's ending - after walking out of the forest, I remove the shot zooming into the book. Instead, I cut directly to her walking down the road before falling. When the driver approaches, all of his dialogue is cut. When Mia is laying in the car, I play Bruce Campbell's "Groovy" line from the end credits to the moment right before Mia opens her eyes
