MERGING METROPOLIS

HAMZAH YASEEN

Agronica is a theory created by Andrea Branzi that looks at the separation of function and form. It does not replace the Metropolis but becomes apart of what already exists, utilizing electronic equipment to be able to carry out the same functions anywhere. It may appear alongside existing structures but never replaces them.

I took this theory and interpreted it in my own way. Being a theory it does not physically exist so I collated existing metropolis’ and analyzed them to determine the characteristics that make them a metropolis. After my analysis I found out that a metropolis is only that if it has the following: economy, education, politics, culture, religion, commerce, communications and international connections. I took these and decided to make new city plans that follows these conditions, examples are the city of Alexandria that was home to one of the largest education hubs at the time. Or the city of Berlin that was once famously divided due to war and politics. Not only did I create new city plans but also merged these with existing metropolis’.

Being theoretical it intrigued me to see what would happen if I replaced the entire city with my Agronica, completely conflicting the original proposal.
