La-a (Ladasha)

La-A's Backstory

La-a is a second grade student who has Asperger's Syndrome. She is hypersensitive to bright fluorescent lights, loud noises, and disruptions to her routine. La-a's teacher tries to be accommodating through utilizing the floor lamps with natural lighting and uses push lights to determine what noise volume should be acceptable for classwork.

When La-a came into class today, the fluorescent lights were on and all of the students were being loud. La-a became extremely anxious, closed her eyes, and covered her ears. A new teacher came to the front of the room. "A substitute?!" La-a thinks. The substitute begins her lesson, but La-a cannot open her eyes. La-a begins to rock back-and-forth. Her substitute teacher asks her to stop. La-a ignores her, continuing to rock back and forth and refusing to do her work. The substitute teacher left a note for her teacher about how poorly behaved La-a was.

The teacher sat back and thought about what she could do to help La-a for the next time a subsitute is in the room. She decides that a social story for a when a substitute teacher comes would be beneficial for her.
