Small pediment gable walls

Question:

Is it necessary for a small pediment gable wall to be of cavity construction?


Considerations:

  • The inner leaf needs to be constructed from the wallplate and around the rafters.

  • Some wind-driven rain may penetrate fairfaced brickwork.

  • The outer leaf needs adequate support.


Answer:

Small pediment gable walls should be of cavity construction, although it may be impractical to build a masonry inner leaf e.g.

masonry should not be built o a timber wall plate.
