Smoke Alarm

Smoke alarms should be provided in accordance the Building regulations approved design and as per the manufacturer’s installation instruction. Smoke alarms must be connected to the main electrical supply and contain a battery backup system. Multiple smoke alarms throughout the property must linked together.

  • Smoke alarms must be positioned within circulation spaces of each floor in the property and must be able to be tested safely from the floor.

  • No door to a room must exceed 7.5m from a smoke alarm. An addition smoke alarm must be provided in these instances.

  • Smoke alarms must be positioned a minimum of 300mm from walls and light fittings.

  • Check manufacturers guidance for the distance to a loft hatch.

  • Heat detection alarms should be provided in kitchen areas to the centre of the kitchen, where required.
