Juliette Balconies

Balconies shall be adequately guarded to minimise the risk of falling, considering the strength and stability of the guarding, durability and fixing of the guarding and the height in relation to the finish floor level.

  • Glazed Juliette balcony guarding should be fixed level in accordance with structural engineer design.

  • Guarding is required to be a minimum of 1100mm above internal finished floor level.

  • Fixings should be to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • - Fixings into mortar joints must be avoided.

  • - Multiple fixings into a singular brick/block must be avoided.

  • Maximum permissible gaps around glazing guarding should not exceed 100mm.

  • Steel Juliette balcony guarding should be fixed level in accordance with structural engineer design.

  • Guarding is required to be a minimum of 1100mm above finished floor level.

  • Fixings should be to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Fixings into mortar joints must be avoided.

  • Multiple fixings into a singular brick/block must be avoided.

  • Maximum permissible gaps around guarding and between spindles should not exceed 100mm.

  • Minimum height of Juliette balcony guarding is 1100mm from the finished floor level.

  • If the width of the sill is more than 150mm and the step rise is greater than 300mm; the guarding must be a minimum of 800mm above the step.

  • Where fixing of the Juliette balcony guarding cannot be achieve as per the engineered design or you have concerns regarding the quality of the installation; a “pull out test” in accordance BS8539 must be completed.
