Handrails
Handrails and balustrading shall be correctly located and fixed to provide a safe handhold and constructed to reduce the risk of being climbed or fallen through.
Handrails should be securely fixed and located in accordance with the design.
Have a minimum clearance from any surface of 25mm.
Ensure a firm handhold.
Be continuous, smooth and unobstructed.
Handrails should be shaped or returned to the wall.
Ensure mitres are tight and form a continuation of the moulded shape.
A pattress or solid dab should be provided behind the plasterboard to ensure a solid fixing.
Double handrails should be aligned and between 900-1000mm from the pitch line.
Appropriately finished with paint or stain.
Newel post caps must be fitted.
An additional section of handrail should be provided adjacent newel posts.
If the gap between adjacent newel posts exceed 100mm, a spindle would also be required.
Metal handrails must be fixed in accordance with the design.
On communal stairs, the handrail must extend at least 300mm beyond the final step.
This can be achieved by continuing handrails around corners.
