Headroom and Width

Stairs shall ensure adequate provision headroom and unobstructed width. Stairs should have a minimum 2m clear headroom over the entire length and landing as measured vertically from the pitch line.

  • A clear 2m head room on the stairs is dictated by the position of the trimming joists.

  • Check the design and installation of the trimmer during installation to ensure that there will be sufficient room.

  • Pitch lines are taken from the line touching the nosing (dotted).

  • 2m clear head room is required throughout the entire length and width of the staircase and the landings.

  • Once staircase has been installed, check clear head room with the use of a level from the bulkhead to the pitch line.

  • A clear headroom of 2m should be provided with the allowance of an additional 20mm to allow for plasterboard.
