Section 5.2.6

Cast In-Situ Suspended Floor Slabs

The formation of cast in-situ suspended floor slabs and reinforced concrete flooring systems should be installed in accordance with the Group structural engineer design. Condition of the materials used, temperature and concrete coverage are essential to the performance of the construction.

  • Reinforcing mesh should be stored off the ground and well supported to prevent carbonation, damage and deformation.

  • Within a ground floor construction, the minimum cover to the reinforcement should be as per the table and to the engineers design.

  • Proprietary spacers of the correct size placed at no more than 1m centres.

  • Care must be taken not to damage the membrane when installing the mesh.

  • Coverage maintained around service penetrations.

  • Steel spacers are an acceptable method of ensuring the correct cover to the mesh.

  • Steel spacers must be secured to the mesh to ensure no movement during the placing of the concrete.

  • Overlapping mesh must be tied together and lapped as per the design.

  • Steel mesh is required to bear on to the internal leaf by 67mm.

  • This is to allow for adequate concrete coverage to the steel mesh and bearing for the reinforcement to distribute the load.
