Section 5.1.1

Substructure Walls

Substructure walls distribute the load of the superstructure to the foundations. They are required to be dimensionally accurate to prevent issues in the build process.

  • Trench blocks laid centrally on the foundation to allow. for equal distribution of load.

  • Ensure full bed of mortar for the entire width and length of the trench block.

  • Cavity construction dimensionally accurate.

  • Maintain cavity width with wall ties spaced at a maximum 450mm vertically and 750mm horizontally.

  • Blocks to be of a minimum strength of BBA approved blocks.

  • Joints to be fully filled and struck off level with the blocks.

  • Weak mix concrete compacted into the cavity fill minimum of 375mm below DPC.

  • Provide a chamfered finish to the concrete falling to the outside of the property.

  • Ties placed no more than 450mm apart vertically and 750mm horizontally.

  • Mortar joints fully filled and flush pointed.

  • Concrete caving fill chamfered to the outside.

  • Bed joints fully filled to prevent moisture ingress and provide structural stability.

  • Concrete service lintels bearing a minimum of 150mm.

  • Air bricks built solid into substructure.

  • Below DPC facing brick to allow for external ground level change.

  • Mortar joints fully filled and pointed.

  • Follow the design for brick type in this location.

  • Wall finished with solid engineering bricks.
