Section 4.4.1

Piles - Installation

Pile foundations are an engineer designed foundation solution. Work must be carried out by a specialist contract under the supervision of an engineer. To avoid delays, the preparation of the site including access of machinery and piling mats must be in place in time for the installation.

  • Piling mats to be constructed in accordance with the Working Platform Specification (BRE470).

  • Piles trimmed to the correct height to form the pile cap.

  • Re-bar exposed to undamaged and correct length as detailed in the design.

  • Blinding concrete to be provided between the piles, underneath the ring beams.

  • Pile cap must project above the blinding concrete as detailed in the engineered design. Typically, between 25mm and 75mm.

  • Permanent shuttering to be installed to protect the ring beam and use as formwork to encase the concrete, before backfilling.

  • Heave precautions to be provided where required below the ring beam.*see 4.2.5 Heave precaution.

  • Place ring beam within the permanent shuttering.

  • Supported on suitable spacers to ensure adequate concrete coverage to the ring beam.

  • Provide heave precautions where required to the inside face of the external walls.

  • Backfill around formwork ensuring even pressure along the formwork.

  • Concrete poured to the correct level within the formwork ensuring that concrete coverage is provided at the top of the ring beam.

  • Vibration is required as the concrete is placed to remove any air pockets within the ring beam.

  • Concrete poured to the correct level within the formwork ensuring that concrete coverage is provided at the top of the ring beam.

  • Vibration is required as the concrete is placed to remove any air pockets within the ring beam.

  • A clear solid platform provided for the installation of pre-formed beams.

  • Joint connection must be as per the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
