Section 4.3.1

Steps in Foundations

When in the design, steps in foundations may be formed. Foundation must be bearing into suitable strata and the depth of step must not exceed the thickness of the concrete.

  • Step formation should have level, clean bottoms and vertical sides.

  • The depth of the step should not exceed the thickness of the concrete unless stated in the engineered design.

  • Overlap of concrete must be a minimum of 300mm when the concrete is less than 500mm thick – strip foundation.

  • Where the concrete is more than 500mm thick, a minimum of 1m overlap is required.

  • Robust shuttering must be provided to form steps in concrete foundation.

  • Use suitably sized support to form the shuttering and ensure no movement occurs when concrete is placed.

  • Shuttering must be removed once the concrete has cured.
