Principle Entrance

Part M of the Building Regulations require that people, regardless of disability, age or gender can gain access to buildings, both as visitors and people who live in them. The access options must follow the prescribed hierarchy as detailed in the Building Regulations.

Level Access
Gradient up to 1:60

  • Option 1 – level access up to 1:60.

Gently Sloping
Gradient up to 1:20

  • Option 2 – gently sloping up to 1:20 (50mm:1m).

  • Only available to use when level access is not achievable.

  • Landing platforms are not required in this scenario.

Ramped Access
1:15 max 10m
1:12 max 5m

  • Option 3 – ramped access up to 1:15 (67mm:1m) to a max length of 10m.

  • Option 3 – ramped access up to 1:12 (83mm:1m) to a max length of 5m.

  • Only available to use when level access and gently sloping is not achievable.

  • Landing platforms of 1200mm x 900mm are required in this scenario at the top and bottom of the ramp (highway can be used to assist with this as a landing platform).

  • Threshold drainage strips must be provided to prevent water holding at the entrance.

  • Water must disperse away from the entrance.
