Retaining Walls

Retaining walls shall be adequate for their intended purpose. Precaution shall be taken to ensure stability of the ground. All retaining structure must be constructed in accordance with the engineered design.

  • Foundations and construction of retaining walls must follow the approved engineered design.

  • The site team must check progress of works on a regular basis.

  • Use 65mm square weep holes at 900mm centre to allow for a neat finish.

  • Fence post that sit on top of retaining walls should be fixed to proprietary metal brackets

  • Double end brackets provided at the ends of the soldier course

  • Timber used for retaining structure must be installed as design.

  • Timber for retaining structure up to 1m must have a minimum service life of 15 years.

  • Over 1m, the timber must have a service life of 30 years.

  • Retaining structures with a fall of more than 600mm with access require non-climbable guarding to prevent falling.

  • Guarding must at least 1100mm from the upper ground level providing there is a step less than 300mm to the top of the retaining wall.

  • Guarding must be at a height of 800mm from the top of the retaining wall in this instance.

  • Where the retaining structure is less than 600mm do not require guarding.

  • Gabions must be constructed as per design.
