A LITTLE ABOUT THE ARITHMACOOK
Hello there. I’m Frank and I hate writing about myself, but apparently you’re supposed to do an “about me” section on a blog, so here it is. This little neck of the interwebs has evolved out of my enjoyment of food and passion for mathematics education. As you can see, it leans way more to the food side than the math side, but such is life. Consider it a big helping of recipes with a dash of mathematics seasoning. That was a horrible analogy, but you get the idea.
So, why “The Arithmacook”? You can thank my brother-in-law for that. A while back I was trying to come up with a catchy Instagram name, and he came up with that. It combined the math and food, my wife thought it was clever, and I had no other ideas, so I was sold. The Arithmacook was born… or something.
Over the years, I’ve been experimenting with cooking, and putting my spin on a number of dishes. This has caused me to begin to establish quite a collection of recipes in my notes app on my phone. So I figured, why not start sharing them? A good portion of my cooking learns toward the Italian and Mediterranean type cuisines, so you can probably expect to see a bit of that appearing on here. Additionally, my gaming and fondness for The Legend of Zelda has gotten me into recreating dishes from the series. Expect to see a bunch of Zelda related and inspired recipes. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
Now, how about the math stuff? Well, that comes by way of profession. I’ve been in mathematics education for over 20 years. I’ve taught in the classroom for many, many years. I have moved on from teaching in the classroom, but still in public education. My focus is now working with teachers as an instructional coach and developing mathematics curriculum and assessment. As a result, you’ll get to see my insight and musings in regard to mathematics and mathematics education on the math side of this place.
Well, I think that suffices for a bit of an “about me” section. Hopefully the recipes and musings I put up here will be either entertaining and/or useful. So kick your feet up and enjoy your stay here. Toodles!
