Nancy has a heart of gold. Growing up, her father (who raised her by himself after her mother passed away while giving birth to her-hence, Nancy's an only child) was a nurse and instilled a lot of those nurturing qualities in his daughter. She was a rather lonely child growing up, finding it difficult to make friends during school due to her bookish nature, but showing kindness to everyone she met. 

She joined the military at age 19 to be a combat medic after hearing that there was a shortage of them on the field. There, she found a family in the form of Soap, Eli, Ford, and other members of the Reaper Squad, who were a squadron of soldiers formed shortly after training camp. Though she is typically meek and mousy, when she is around the people she loves (such as the Reaper Squad), she gains confidence to be herself and stand up for what she believes in.
