The Acropolis

Do you wish to see your work on the front page? Have you ever wished to express yourself creatively on something that matters? Do you wish to gain renown for your works across campus? 

Let The Acropolis be the platform which promotes your voice and join us in elevating the standard of university discourse!

Your topic is the freedom of speech and expression. Deadline for all submissions close 21st August, 11:59 pm.

Submission Guidelines

All works should be sent to theacropolisvuw@gmail.com with a brief description of what you are submitting. If you have any queries, send any doubts to the same. Whether your work is included in the magazine is at the discretion of the team of editors, the executives of which are elected annually in Acropolis' AGM by members. 

Spirit of the publication

• The Acropolis is an attempt to bring varied opinions on the same page. Be independent, fiercely so, and avoid cliches.   

• The best ways to bridge divide and convey your arguments are works that show constructive intent. Be intellectually combative, not verbally putrid.  

• Have an aesthetic sense. Use humour, satire, creative expression, but attempt to raise the quality of public discourse through expression.

• If, for any of the written works, you wish for certain images to be included, or wish for a certain tone, please mention that/provide the same! Your work should be yours, and we will ensure that we do not misrepresent you.

General guidelines for all work

• Do not leak private information of individuals (including financial details, home addresses, phone numbers), and if you wish to name private individuals, get their written consent prior to including them in your work. We might ask you to provide this. Public figures can freely be named.  

• You’re free to criticise, but be creative with it. Obscene images or profane language (especially ethnic/racial/gender slurs) will not be accepted.  

• If works of AI are used, it should be clearly stated and for ‘fair-use’. Do not claim other people’s work as your own. Plagiarism is one of the worst sins you can commit in a platform of expression!  

• Include your name and student ID when you submit your work. You’re free to additionally provide any pen-names you want us to put on the Acropolis, but we require your name and ID to put your work in the Acropolis. Rest assured, none of your details will ever be leaked, and only your name that you choose will be put in the magazine.  

Do not compromise your work. If you are doubtful on whether your work clashes with any of the guidelines, reach out to us and clarify! We will do our part in giving you a platform where you can express yourself.

Specific guidelines for illustrations / photographs / visual art / comic strips

• Image format should be JPG. Maximum size of any work/image should not exceed 500 MB.  

• Keep size as A4 for comic strips, illustrations and visual art, or specify the format in which you have made your work.  

• We might have to resize it otherwise.  

• All works should meet the general guidelines of submission. 

• This includes no graphic or obscene content. (If there is an artistic piece of work, the discretion is left to the editor).  

Specific guidelines for articles / opinion pieces / relevant reviews / short stories / works of fiction

• Word count should remain between 800 – 3500 words (Maximum two pages!). 

• Include references if data/studies are mentioned, or specific/niche facts relevant to your work is mentioned.  

• For works of non-fiction, your work will not be edited but will be checked for factual accuracy if it is included in the issue of the Acropolis. An editorial column next to your work may be used if no references are provided, or comments of clarification to certain claims are made to ensure that the Acropolis does not become a platform for scientific misinformation.  

• The format for submitted works should be either .docx or .pdf.  

• Adhere to general guidelines and attempt to stay true to the spirit of the Acropolis!  

Poetry

• Mention the relevant style of poetry.  

• Ensure that the length of any poem does not exceed a full page.  

• Adhere to general guidelines.  

• Works can be submitted in .docx or .pdf format.
