Hello, Diancie chess puzzle is a super annoying part of Diancie quest. I made this guide to help ppl stop from suffering this badly designed quest and enjoy the game more. Due to RNG, technically you can miss everything so there will never be a guarantee win, but trust me, this is much better than almost any current strategy ppl using, I able to help 5 ppl won 5 times a row and super fast if u lucky enough.

This is my first PICO-8 game. I just posted it on itch.io yesterday for submission into the 20 Second Game Jam, so clearly you're not in for an hours-long game of chess with this one. The main game mode lasts 20 seconds of course, but the version I'm posting here includes a mode that isn't timed as well as a practice mode.

The idea for this game started with imagining a one-player type of chess that didn't rely on an AI-based opponent. You're presented with a 4x4 board with five pieces to capture. First you select a piece to start on, and you now have its moves available to capture with. As you capture pieces, you gain more moves. You lose by letting time run out or by landing in a spot where a piece can capture you. None of the pieces move unless it's to capture!

The knight is the only modern chess piece that made it into the game. The ferz, dabbaba, alfil and wazir pieces are from older versions of chess and often included in chess problems and variants. I made up the hound and boot pieces.

So this is meant to be a centerpiece for a 20 floor megadungeon-esque tower (meant to be routinely visited throughout the game) and players are meant to return to this puzzle-fight multiple times. It's probably broken to all hell, which is why I'm posting it here and asking for the expert's advice. So, my main questions are these:

-If you were a player how would you break this (keep in mind that nothing past the basic rules of the "King's Game" will be made aware to the players, and even then they must roll a DC 11 Knowledge (Nobility) skill check for their characters to understand the rules) and everything else must be found out through trial and error. It's important that the players be rewarded for their cleverness in "cheating" but it shouldn't be easy or without cost.

-As a dm who is probably more experienced than I, what would you change to make this flow more smoothly? What problems do you see arising from it being played as described?

-I currently only have the stats for the first level of the game. How would you increase the difficulty of the constructs as the levels progress, aside from having them hit harder and have more health.

These constructs are only the pieces for the first difficulty of the puzzle/combat. I'd like to give them more abilities as the difficulty increases, so if you guys have any ideas, I'm all ears. Besides hp and raw attacking power, one thing I know will happen at higher level difficulty is increasing the caster level of the bishop's magic missile. I also really like the idea of giving the rooks Force Push as an SLA for their retaliation.
