An arrow pierced you through the heart– witnessing something worth watching, or something that should not have happened. A situation of dire decision, giving you a place, and a choice, to think of what is best to relieve your pain. A choice to choose whether to scream and let your voice resonate to taste the change you have been longing for, or sustain the wound through an infinite loop of despair from the system.
The arrow reaches you. Impaling your insides as your thoughts start to stride; would you risk your athletic status for your stand on politicization in sports, or not?
Sports have been around for centuries, from the Romans who once ruled empires and transcended as one of the intricate civilizations that shaped society to how it is right now. During the Roman Empire, chariot races and gladiatorial contests were used to divert public attention from political unrest or to promote imperial propaganda.
The twisted nature of sports and politics narrates that this relationship has existed for
centuries, putting into light the broader dynamics of power, identity, and ideology within society for the sole purpose of entertainment.
As sports emerge into a new generation, it also immerses fans across the globe to a world filled with politicization, it sparked debates and highlighted the intersection of sports and societal challenges. One of which is the controversy surrounding Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the national anthem in protest against racial
injustice and police brutality back in 2016. That sole gesture proved to be powerful that it not only brewed debates within the sports community but it resonated all throughout the globe which ignited discussions about systemic racism, freedom of expression, and the role of athletes in advocating for social change. This act exemplifies that even sports can transcend as a catalyst for change, amplifying voices in the society ultimately.
Individuality and the athlete’s growing willingness to use their platforms for more than just athletic achievements varies in the politicization of sports; today they recognize their influence and use it to leverage themselves in advocating for social justice causes, ranging from racial and gender equality to environmental sustainability. Such voices were also utilized from the legacy of Muhammad Ali who embraced his role as ambassador for change, echoing their stance, and paving a way for athletes to
transcend sports and make a meaningful impact beyond the scoreboard.
Divided when bullseye occurs, critics often argue that incorporating politics into the essence of sports detracts from the “purity” of athletic competition and sportsmanship, alienating fans who seek to escape the complexities of this world. However, as sports is being utilized for recreational activities, it has been long used by governments and organizations as tools of diplomacy, propaganda, and nation-building, which underscores the inherent politicization of sports even before athletes began engaging in political activism.
Everything is political, even sports can be political as you may realize, as athletes can serve as a powerful platform for social activism, advocacy, and the expression of
political views. The actions and statements of athletes, whether through gestures or speaking out on social issues, have the capacity to influence public discourse and
challenge societal norms. Sports not only reflect the political landscape but actively
contribute to shaping it, resonating that the realm of athletics is intricately woven into the fabric of our political reality. Even if there is a great divide on choosing what is
ethical and morally right, people should understand that sports can and will have a bigger catalytic responsibility in illuminating change through our bowed voices in the likes of politics.
An arrowhead represents precision and direction—a focused force with the power to effect change, once shot, can either be outside or inside the spectrum of targets. When sports intersect with politics, they become a potent instrument for social impact and advocacy. An arrowhead embodies the importance of balance and skill in wielding
influence responsibly. The politicization of sports must be approached with intention and awareness, recognizing its potential to pierce societal norms and catalyze transformation. Many people might disagree on using yet another platform for their
entertainment and pleasure, but as society sees it, it is a platform that would and will make the world a better place, a place where voices can emulate the force of change in any medium possible. By harnessing this force responsibly, we can harness the potential of sports by shooting that arrow and landing its head where society needs it the most.
