Despite the numerous attempts by Filipinos to escape cruel societies, it is saddening to know that the government continuously finds a way to trap and manipulate them for their own sake, which is evident as they desperately push for charter change.
Among the controversial issues in the Philippines is the Charter change or Cha-Cha, which refers to the amendments in the country’s 1987 constitution. According to an article by Julie M. Aurelio in “Inquirer.Net”, it was on December 13, 2023, when the House of Representatives pushed for economic charter change by making it more attuned, sensitive, and responsive as its goal. As they keep on pushing this through the “People’s Initiative”, one of three methods in proposing amendments to the said constitution, people's opinions are divided; some support it, while others are against it on the other hand. Those supporters of it are mainly from the government officials, who believe that it is a good thing for national growth. However, it can't be denied that what weighs more is those against it, as they believe that there are unclear and suspicious acts being done and that it’s not really for the masses, but for those greedy in power.
Moreover, the main reason as to why some are against it is mainly due to the whole process. Foremost, there are no proper heads-up for Filipinos about it. Instead of educating or explaining it to the people very well first, they started to gather signatures in despair even when specific individuals didn't know the purpose of it or what it was for. It was stated in CNN Philippines on January 18, 2024, that some Filipinos who were asked for support in connection with the act by signing it, confessed that they didn’t know about it. On the other hand, some argue that the signing of people is fake because of the duration of gathering signatures from the masses, which could prove that there is an organized effort to fake everything and to make it successful. Moreover, when people’s voices became louder about it, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. then wanted to hold a plebiscite that would be held alongside the 2025 midterm Polls, even though the said purpose was to lessen the expenses, it remains dubious as it can be used for easier turning of everything upside down. Through all of these, the aimed Cha-Cha is indeed done through ‘Government’s Initiative’, not “People’s Initiative” for the term extension of the government officials and their other advantages.
If will think more profoundly about it on the other hand, amending some parts of the 1987 constitution of the Philippines is not a bad thing, especially if what will be changed is that needed or beneficial for the people, especially those part of the marginalized. One of the examples of this is through revising some parts that could better help uphold people’s rights. It’s just the contrary if done with an act full of dubious ways and if it's against the people.
To conclude, Cha-Cha, which is carried out by the new administration, could just be a trap for some of the government officials’ benefits. It would be better if instead of focusing on this, they would give attention to the most pressing problems in the country, such as poverty and unemployment, as economic revision is not the solution to the various problems in the country. Furthermore, at the end of the day, an act full of wary is not actually for all, but for specific individuals who only think of themselves.
